Borussia Dortmund have announced that Jadon Sancho and Roman Burki will miss Wednesday’s DFL Super Cup against Bayern Munich due to a respiratory infection.
The club also proved that the players had tested negative for Covid-19.
The two clubs will face off at Munich’s Allianz Arena after wasting their last Bundesliga matches after the new season with a win.
Dortmund lost 2-0 in Augsburg on Saturday, while defending champion Bayern fell 4-1 through Hoffenheim on Sunday, ending a 32-match unbeatic streak in all competitions.
The two have become accustomed to competing in the German Super Cup, with Wednesday being the seventh match between the two in the last 11 years.
Dortmund have won 3 of the first matches, adding up last year, with the absence of Sancho and Burki, which will be a big blow to them in this season’s match.
Sancho scores 35 goals and forty-five assists in his first 101 outings with Lucien Favre’s team, which has attracted a lot of interest this summer from Manchester United.
Dortmund, however, have rejected all efforts through the Red Devils to point out Sancho and on Tuesday the club’s captain, Marco Reus, gave the impression of discarding any movements abroad from England this year.
“For us players, it is wonderful news. We were all satisfied that he was with us during the season,” Reus told Sky Germany.
“Also because it gives problems to the team. Goals, attendances, in the end, that in many problems.
“He’s a player to us. If you’re going to be as wonderful a player as [Christian] Ronaldo, only time will tell. He wants a little time, a lot of experience. “
In statements to Dortmund’s official website, Reus described the challenge he will face against last season’s three-time winners.
“They are very, very intelligent. If you win the Champions League, especially the way they did, it’s awesome. We played in front of the most productive team Europa. Es a smart game to see where we are,” Reus said.
“I think either group will form a strong team. There is a name at stake and there has been a lot of prestige in the game for decades. No one has to get out of the picture losing, so we’re going to do everything we can. “to win tomorrow. “
