MANCHESTER, England (AP) – Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is expected to appear in a Greek court on Saturday after being arrested after a night incident on Mykonos Island.
Maguire, one of England’s most prominent footballers, photographed being escorted to a police station on the Aegean island of Syros, near Mykonos, on Friday through plaincloel officers.
Britain has “fully cooperated” with the Greek authorities, United said in a brief statement, following the incident that led to his arrest in the early hours of Friday. Greek state television ERT said Maguire’s brother and a friend had also been arrested.
Local police said 3 British citizens were facing charges of verbal abuse and use of physical violence against police, as well as attempted corruption, after officials were called into an incident in Mykonos involving two other teams in a fight. The three men allegedly abused and beat one of the officers seeking to break the enmity, resisted arrest and then attacked the officers outside the police station, police said, not naming Maguire.
A police officer said one of the three arrested men had tried to offer cash to the police to avoid arrest.
Syros is the administrative center of the Cycladic Islands, located Mykonos.
United’s players are on a low-season break after Sevilla in the Europa League semi-final on Sunday.
Maguire, 27, is the world’s top-start defender, and signed with United from Leicester last year with an 80 million pound ($97 million) contract. He is captain halfway through his first season at Old Trafford.
