ATHENS: Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was released through a Greek prosecutor after appearing in court on Saturday (22 August) after two days detained by a fight on Mykonos Island, the Premier League club confirmed.
England foreigner Maguire, 27, will respond to the rates against him on 25 August, according to police.
In a statement, Manchester United said: “Following today’s court appearance, we took note of the postponement of the case to allow the legal team to review the case.
“Harry has asked not to blame the charges.It would be useless for the player or club to make additional comments while the legal process is ongoing.”
Images from local television showed Maguire leaving a courthouse on the nearest island of Syros, accompanied by members of his legal team, and getting into a dark van.
His lawyer, Constantinos Darivas, had previously told the Greek sports page gazzetta.gr that the British central defender had denied the fees and was in “good condition” despite having spent two nights in detention since his arrest on Thursday night.
Greek tv channel Mega said Maguire’s father had to go to Greece to be by his son’s side.
The case is known on the island of Syros, the administrative center of the organization of the Cycladic islands that Mykonos.
The 80 million-pound ($104.7 million) defender arrested Thursday night after what Greek police described as an “altercation” between two teams of British tourists in Mykonos.
Mega said Maguire became enraged after a member of the other organization hit his sister.
A statement from Greek police on Friday that three men over the age of 27, 28 and 29 had been arrested in Mykonos.
Police said a police officer attacked at the scene and at one point a fight broke out at the local police station where the three men “vigorously resisted (arrest), pushing and beating three cops.”
Then one of the suspects tried to bribe the officials to monitor the incident, police said.
Suspects are charged with assault, resisting arrest, verbally insulting and threatening officers who arrested them, and trying to bribe them, police said.
Four Mykonos officers suffered minors in the accident, the government said.
Mykonos is with sports stars and celebrities for its nightlife and beaches.
United said in a letter Friday that they were “aware of an alleged incident involving Harry Maguire in Mykonos last night.”
“Contacts have been made with Harry and he is cooperating with the Greek authorities.
“At this time we will not comment,” the club added.
United’s 2019/20 season ended on Sunday with a 2–1 loss to Sevilla in the Europa League semi-finals.
But the club will return to preseason education in two weeks and the new Premier League crusade may begin in less than a month.
On Monday, Maguire tweeted after the elimination: “It’s time to go, think and be in a position to become more powerful next season.”
