An era of cessation at the Stadio Olimpico has revived the defense race, and the Italians also expect more from Manchester United.
As through SunSport, the 20 million pound prize placed on Smalling’s head through Ole Gunnar Solskjaer proved to be a major impediment to the Giallorossi.
But Fulham, Newcastle, Everton and West Ham are now discussing the issue as stakeholders.
The 90min believes that English players have a better chance of paying the odds demanded by the 30-year-old.
West Ham and Everton will get on the table after disappointing campaigns last time, while Steve Bruce’s Newcastle is adjusting to life after the club’s takeover collapse through Saudi Arabia.
A change to the newly promoted Fulham would mean a return from Craven Cottage to Smalling, who joined the West London team from Maidstone in 2008 before a wonderful transfer of 12 million pounds to Manchester.
Rome remains determined to point out to its star last season, who would like another year in the Italian capital, but also faces the Inter Milan festival.
If a deal is out of reach, the club recently purchased through American billionaire Dan Friedkin would do so with Arsenal’s Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
And yet the possibility of a sensational moment at Old Trafford is out of the question.
With his United career buried 12 months ago, Smalling has shown his “courage” to boss Solskjaer and may have some other chance in the first team.
The manager said: “I think Chris has shown throughout his career at Manchester United how valuable he is at Manchester United.”
“This season was normal and he went to Rome and showed how smart the central defender is, I sought to give Harry [Maguire], Victor [Lindelof] and maybe Axel [Tuanzebe] a try.
“It was better for him to spend and play for a year in Rome and he proved it will be valuable, I have spoken to Chris. He was very happy with his season.”
