Manchester United face FC Copenhagen at the RheinEnergieSTADION on Monday for this UEFA Europa League Quarter Final match.

All remaining UEFA competition matches will be single-leg and played in neutral venues. Therefore, this match is being played at the home of the local Bundesliga team, 1. FC Köln. Stadion Köln, as it is known to fans, will also be the venue for the 2020 Europa League final.

United and Copenhagen have met twice previously in competitive action. Both teams won their home group match when they met in Group F of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League.

Manchester United have won four of their last five Europa League matches. They also won 3-0 in their only home match against Copenhagen, back in 2006. They start the match as huge 2/7 favourites to advance to the Semi-Finals.

Copenhagen are the 1-1 draw experts in the competition this season. They have had this exact score-line in four of their last nine Europa League matches. United also drew 1-1 with Club Brugge in the first leg in the Round of 32. This could make the long odds of 17/4 for a stalemate over 90 minutes of very good value.

The Danish side won their only home encounter with United in their history. Marcus Allbäck scored the only goal of the game. As a result, they won 1-0 against a star-studded United side including Ronaldo, Rooney, and Vidic. They have also won their last three matches in all competitions. Despite this, they start the match as outsiders, at 19/2.

Mason Greenwood is United’s top scorer in the Europa League this season. He was rested against LASK but will likely come into the side against Copenhagen.

Greenwood has scored seventeen goals this season, four of which were the first goal of the game. The 17-year old has also been used as an impact sub off the bench, scoring the final goal of the game seven times this season.

Bruno Fernandes could also be a sound investment to get on the scoresheet. Manchester United have been winning penalties at an unprecedented rate this season.

Should they win another spot-kick against Copenhagen, Bruno will be the man to step up and take it. The Portuguese international has scored each of his last seventeen penalties. His career conversion rate is 93%.

Jonas Wind is averaging a goal every 145 minutes for Copenhagen this season. He made his first appearance in the Europa League this season on Wednesday evening, scoring a brace to put his side through to the Quarter Finals.

Wind has a knack for scoring the opening goal of the game, with four of his ten goals this season putting his side 1-0 ahead. He is also his side’s spot-kick taker, should Copenhagen get awarded one, and is seven out of seven in his career with penalties.

Of the remaining sides left in the competition, Manchester United are the only ones highlighted as a clear favourite to advance to the Semi-Final stage.

Most betting odds would suggest United are being given around a 90% chance of making it to the last four. While the Inter v Leverkusen, Wolves v Sevilla and Shakhtar v Basel matches are all seeing the favourite on 52% to 56%.

Obviously, they are not all wrong in this prediction. Copenhagen are clearly the underdogs here, but it’s a situation they have thrived in so far in the competition against both Celtic and Istanbul Basaksehir.

Their aim seems to be to shut the game down, reduce it to a match of few good chances, and aim to nick a goal. They have the lowest average number of goals in their matches at just 1.9. Their matches also have the lowest expected goals at 2.03 on average. Essentially, they are the Sam Allardyce side left in the competition.

This isn’t said in slight of them. It is a useful tactic for underdogs as a more open game will typically be won by the team with the most quality. We saw Greece win a European Championship with these very same tactics. So a team with an estimated squad value of 1/20th that of Manchester United, Copenhagen simply cannot open up and go toe-to-toe with them.

Whereas, United are one of the most dominant sides left in the competition. 85.2% of the goals scored in their games have been for United. This game likely comes down to how well Copenhagen can restrict United versus how well United can unpick a low-block.

Axel Tuanzebe, Luke Shaw and Phil Jones are the only players ruled out of this match for United, due to injury.

The Man Utd XI that started against LASK on Wednesday looked very much like a second-string. Harry Maguire is the only player that started the match who looks guaranteed to keep his place against Copenhagen.

Despite only having one start in the competition, David de Gea will likely replace Sergio Romero between the sticks for the rest of the competition. Although, Romero has been dependable when called upon, saving 85% of the shots he faced and keeping a clean sheet in six out of eight matches.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelöf and Brandon Williams are all likely to be recalled to give United their strongest possible back four.

One of Scott McTominay or Fred will likely keep their place in midfield. Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes are expected to start the match, with two of three from the Fred, McTominay and Lingard trio missing out.

Juan Mata, Odion Ighalo and Daniel James will likely be replaced by Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood. The young attacking trident has ten goals between them in the competition this season.

Nicklas Bendtner will take no part in the match for Copenhagen. He left the club to appear in a reality TV show alongside his girlfriend. The former Arsenal man last featured in November 2019 and played just one minute for them in the Europa League this season.

Michael Santos will play no part in the match as he currently serves his three-game UEFA suspension. He was charged with assault after footage showed him pushing a police officer to the floor while celebrating Copenhagen’s goal against Celtic in the Round of 32, second leg.

Robert Mudrazija was a surprise starter in midfield against Başakşehir. It was his first start of the season having missed the majority of it due to knee surgery before this campaign kicked off. Jens Stage is likely to replace him in the starting XI here.

Teenager Mikkel Kaufmann was also chosen to lead the line ahead of Mohammed Daramy, who is also in his teens. Daramy will likely return to the starting line-up against United.
