This will most likely be a quiet window for Manchester United when it comes to tackles, even if the spaces they find themselves in are up front and in central defence.
Longer-term goals are expected to be pursued over the summer to reach an agreement in January and also to comply with FFP regulations.
Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy is known and the release clause is said to be around £15. 6 million (€17 million).
Good defender Jean-Clair Todibo is also a player they’ve been around for a while, but his valuation can be prohibitive in this window.
United, as they did last January, may barely glance at the loan market, but manager Erik ten Hag is quick to point out that a number of injured players are expected to return this month.
At his current team, Raphael Varane has entered the final year of his contract and is unable to speak to clubs outside England before moving this summer.
United have the option to extend his contract by a further year, but – as it stands – are unlikely to do so on the current terms. Talks are continuing over a new contract and he remains part of Ten Hag’s plans.
Casemiro is unlikely to leave this window amid speculation over his future. Ten Hag has been talking up his imminent return from injury. Casemiro has two-and-a-half years left on his contract – with the club holding the option to extend for a further year.
There is no sign of reconciliation between Ten Hag and Jadon Sancho, and several domestic and foreign clubs are timidly interested in him. As with all possible inflows and outflows, new INEOS co-owners will want to be consulted.
Anthony Martial has entered the final six months of his contract. United have the option to extend for a further 12 months – as yet, there is no sign they will trigger the extension. It’s thought suitable offers for the forward will be considered.
United are expected to activate the one-year option on Hannibal Mejri’s contract as his current contract expires this summer. Several European clubs are willing to loan him out.
United will assess all options before deciding what is best for the player and the club. Casemiro and Mason Mount are returning from long-term injuries, which could further limit Hannibal’s game time.
The winter move-in window is now open and will close at 11 p. m. in England and Scotland on Thursday, February 1, 2024.
To ensure harmonisation with the major leagues in Europe, the closing dates were set following discussions with the EFL, DFL, Serie A, LaLiga, and LFP, who will all close their summer and winter windows on 1 September and 1 February respectively.
