Dunne joined the Shelbourne Red Devils in 1960 and played 535 games, a number that places him eighth on the club’s all-time list.

The side was a two-time league champion in his 13th birthday at Old Trafford, and helped win the name in 1965 and 1967, as well as in the FA Cup.

Dunne appeared in each and every circular as Matt Busby’s team crowned European champion in 1968, fitting the first English team to lift the trophy.

United beat Benfica 4-1 in a final that went on extra time, Bobby Charlton scored twice while George Best and Brian Kidd also discovered the network at Wembley.

Selected 33 times across the Republic of Ireland, Dunne joined Bolton Wanderers on a loose move in 1973, finishing six years there before finishing his career with a brief period in the North American Football League with the Detroit Express.

In a tweet following the announcement of his death, United described Dunne as “one of our greatest sides,” adding, “Our deepest condolences are for Tony Dunne’s family. May he rest in peace. “
