BUENOS AIRES – Argentine footballer Diego Maradona will be hospitalized on Wednesday and transferred to a rehabilitation clinic where he will be treated for alcohol addiction, his lawyer told the press.
The former Napoli and Boca Juniors gamer underwent emergency surgery Tuesday for a subdural hematoma, a blood clot in the brain.
He then stayed longer than expected due to withdrawal symptoms caused by his sudden abstention from alcohol.
However, Matías Morla said the 60-year-old coach of Gymnastics and Fencing would leave the hospital and move to a rehabilitation center where only a few close friends would be allowed access.
“Diego is total and needs to go through rehab and is scheduled to leave (the hospital) today,” Morla told reporters outside the clinic where he is recovering.

The hospital remains the newest in a series of fitness alarms for the charismatic and debatable star who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986 and is considered one of the greatest players of all time.
“Diego went through maybe the hardest time of his life and I think it’s a miracle they discovered this bleeding in his brain that may have claimed his life,” Morla said.
