Russell Martin admits he cannot guarantee Mason Holgate will be a Southampton player after January amid the announcement of a move to Rangers.
Everton manager Sean Dyche is reportedly in a position to get the Championship defender back, as his loan at St Mary’s was hampered by injury and a lack of selection. He has only made five league appearances so far and the Rangers are reportedly among an organisation of clubs “waiting in the wings” to reach a transitional deal if the Toffees withdraw him.
Former Gers defender and Southampton boss Martin was asked about the rumours and knows lack of games will be a frustration for Holgate. He tells the Daily Echo he doesn’t know where the versatile defender will be come the end of tee window in a hint over his future. Martin said: “There has been no conversation about that as far as I am aware. Mason came back into the team and did really well after a difficult start, he can’t do anything else than play really well and be a good teammate.
“Mason came back into the team and did well after a tough start, he can’t do anything but play well and be a smart teammate. It was my resolution and it was difficult.
“I’ve left out someone who has been wonderful for tomorrow’s game and the verbal exchange is not easy. When you worry about them, it’s a terrible verbal exchange and that’s why leaders can be very lonely, you feel the anger that they feel. “towards them.
“Mason was a victim of that and he didn’t do anything wrong, he looks like the player he knew we were signing when he came back to the team.
“He’s out of the team because the other guys played well and that’s frustrating for him. I can’t stand here and say it will definitely stay. Would we need him to stay? yes, he’s a wonderful teammate, he’s a wonderful teammate. “Teammate There was a smart power and he’s been smart on the field the last few times.
“However, I also sense that he probably needs to play more minutes and for Everton it’s probably frustrating as well. I’m sure there will be conversations between Jason (Wilcox), Everton and maybe Mason’s agent at some point. Until something genuine interest turns into anything, I don’t think it will come to my door anyway. And if that’s the case, we’ll have to deal with that at that point.
