Matchday Gallery | Hammers start New Year with Manchester City defeat

West Ham United’s New Year’s Eve first ended in a 4-1 Premier League defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.

The Irons had a good start at the Etihad Stadium, ending with Mohammed Kudus and Tomáš Souček, but fell into the absence of ten minutes.

There was an element of fortune to the Citizens’ opener, as Savinho’s cross from the left took a wicked deflection off Vladimír Coufal and left Alphonse Areola wrongfooted.

Three minutes before the break, Manchester City took the competition. Once Savinho was involved, sending a mocking cross for Erling Haaland to nod in the distant post.

The Hammers’ task became a virtually impossible one eleven minutes after the restart when Haaland clipped over Areola to make it 3-0.

And two minutes later, he 4 thanks to Phil Foden’s end.

Niclas Füllkrug took one in the 19th minute in Manchester, but it was too little, too late for the East Londoners.
