Matt Lubick started his war against cancer with a marathon.
The veteran football coach ran the 26-mile marathon in the hospital on the first day of chemotherapy at the University of Colorado’s UCHealth Hospital, as detailed in an article on the hospital’s website.
Lubick, the son of legendary Colorado state football coach Sonny Lubick, was educated to run a marathon when nagging fatigue and fever landed him on a medical scale in August 2023.
He was eventually diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, according to the University of Colorado Cancer Center. She went into remission two weeks after starting treatment. He then won a mobile stem transplant, which aims to prevent the leukemia from returning.

Nevada officially announced Monday the hiring of Lubick as offensive coordinator, first-year head coach Jeff Choate.
Lubick played quarterback at Fort Collins High School and defensive back at Western Montana College before following in his father’s footsteps through coaching.
He worked as a graduate assistant on his father’s team at CSU in 1995 and then as a catchers coach from 2001 to 2004. Lubick spent time as offensive coordinator in Nebraska, Washington and Oregon. He has coached at Duke, Arizona State, Ole Miss, Oregon State, San Jose State, and Cal State Northridge, in addition to CSU.
