Meaning of BVB: Borussia Dortmund nickname explained

The term “BVB”, pronounced in German “bay-fow-bay”, comes from the official name of the club, Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e. V. Dortmund. Broken down into its constituent parts, the denomination means: ball game club – Borussia – 1909 – registered – Dortmund.

“Dortmund” here, of course, refers to the city where the club is located. ‘eV’ refers to the legal prestige of the club. ’09’ means the club founded in 1909.

These, however, have little to do with the party’s common identifier such as “BVB”. This acronym is constructed from the first two words of the call which actually consist of 4 separate German words. “Ballspielverein” is a word composed of tastesthat are discovered in German clubs to describe the type of game in which they participate (or in which they originally participate).

Watch: Meet Borussia Dortmund

For example, VfB in Stuttgart and VfL in Wolfsburg stand for Verein für Bewegungsspiele (physical play club) and Verein für Leibesübungen (exercise club) respectively. TSG Hoffenheim stands for Turn- und Sportgemeinschaft Hoffenheim (Hoffenheim Gymnastics and Sports Club). “FC” in such as Bayern Munich and Schalke means Fußballclub (football club).

In Dortmund’s case, their “Ballspielverein” implies that they specialised in ball sports, particularly football. Eagle-eyed readers may have already seen the origin of ‘BV’ in ‘BVB’. The nickname, of course, ends with “Borussia”, which although derived from the Latin name of the former German region of Prussia, passed into the hands of the founders of a local brewery in Dortmund.

However, one question is important again. . . If BVB comes from ‘Ballspielverein Borussia’, why don’t enthusiasts refer to BSVB?Unfortunately, the answer is more linguistic than the fact that the club chant of ‘Heja BVB’ is catchier than it would be. be like ‘Heja BSVB’. Although ‘Ballspielverein’ can be divided into its 3 main elements of ‘Ball’, ‘Spiel’ and ‘Verein’, the term is a mixture of only two pre-existing words: ‘Ballspiel’ and ‘Verein’, hence ‘BV’ and not ‘BSV’ as might be assumed from the deconstruction of the word.
