Memphis will have to wait at least a week to play his football game for now.
The Tigers announced Saturday that their game opposed to UTSA on Friday had been canceled due to positive COVID-19 tests in Memphis and quarantined players. The game will be rescheduled.
Memphis suspended football on September 11 due to a positive under the show and trained Saturday for the first time since September 8.
“While we expect our quarantine and isolation figures for next week, we felt it was in the most productive interest for fitness and the protection of our student-athletes to take this resolution now,” Memphis Athletic Director Laird Veatch said in a statement. “It also gives UTSA the greatest flexibility to locate a replacement opponent. “
That’s exactly what UTSA did when it announced Saturday that it will host Middle Tennessee State on Friday.
Memphis announced that he added Stephen F. Austin for a home game on November 21 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Stephen F. Austin (0-2) lost 24-10 at UTSA on Saturday.
This will be the meeting time of all times between and filling out an open date on the Tigers calendar.
Before the schedule was announced, Tigers coach Ryan Silverfield said Saturday that the UTSA game was a fear because he sought to make sure the players were healthy and conditioned after an 11-day practice absence. Some had been absent longer due to touch search quarantine or positive testing.
Now, with the week off, the Tigers have time to recover before their next game scheduled on SMU on October 3.
This is the third off-conference game the Tigers have canceled on their calendar with Purdue and UT-Martin. The Tigers’ September 18 game against Houston has been postponed and either is working with the AAFC to postpone it for a later date.
