Mesut Ozil criticized Arsenal’s reaction to his comments on the persecution of Uighur Muslims in China and asked the club to say “The lives of Muslims matter” as “The lives of blacks matter.”
In December 2019, Ozil spoke out forcefully on Instagram to oppose China’s remedy for the Uighur population in the northwest region of Xinjiang, where more than a million more people have reportedly been held in detention camps in recent years.
Ozil’s Instagram post read: ‘Eastern Turkestan, the bleeding wound of the Ummah, resistant to the persecutors to separate them from their religion.
