Legendary striker I M Vijayan wrestled in Hindi with his teammates on the field, but maintained his brilliant understanding of the “football language,” former Indian player Aqueel Ansari said. (More football news)
Ansari, who played for India in some matches in the 1990s, said Vijayan does not feel comfortable speaking in Hindi, but that he can read the game better than anyone.
“Vijayan-bhai was our eldest and all you said about him is less so. But his Hindi wasn’t up to it and he used to have difficulty communicating,” Ansari said.
“But he probably knew the language of football more than anyone else and his reproduction was exceptional. He was a user who used to get to the right position at the right time and make the task a lot easier.”
Former Captain Vijayan, the Indian football cartel before Bhaichung Bhutia arrived on stage, his goalscorer talent made him the feared striker of his time.
He scored 4 goals in 4 games for India to win the first South Asian Football Federation Cup in 1993 in Pakistan.
“He (Vijayan) is definitely our most productive striker. At Lahore, he worked hard and is our key man,” Ansari said.
Tejinder Kumar, part of the SAFF Cup winning team in Lahore, said Pakistani enthusiasts had told Indian players they would return without winning the tournament.
“There were smiling faces everywhere when we landed in Pakistan. We were warmly welcomed and felt at home. But there was someone at the airport who smiled at us and said, ‘Bhaijaan, swagat hai. Lekin aap log har ke hi lautogey ( Welcome to Pakistan. But come back empty-handed,” Tejinder recalls.
“They gave us a wonderful reception. Everyone was looking ahead to see if we didn’t have any problems. There was strict security, even at the hotel. No one could go anywhere without security.”
The Indian team, led by Czech Jiri Pesak and led by V P Sathyan, began their crusade with a 2-0 win over Sri Lanka with Vijayan and Gunabir Singh.
Vijayan then helped India fly Nepal five days later. And in the resolution’s creator, India received an opposite point to Pakistan, thanks to Vijayan’s last tie, to win the trophy just that day, 27 years ago.
