Sahadi’s, Brooklyn’s beloved Middle Eastern grocery store, returns to Manhattan after 75 years. Opening next week in Chelsea, in the new food corridor at Pier 57, the outpost will offer bar service and sit-down dining. Sahadi’s has roots in the city; His first store opened on Washington Street in 1895 in what was considered “Little Syria,” before moving to Cobble Hill in 1948. Sahadi’s will officially open its doors at Market 57 on Monday, November 27.
The domain directly south of the World Trade Center, around Washington Street, was home to the country’s first Arabic-speaking network from the late 1880s to the 1940s. During the construction of the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, many citizens and businesses in Little Syria were displaced, adding Sahadi’s, which moved to Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn in 1948.
In 2019, the grocery store, known for its incredible array of cereals, spices, nuts, olives, coffees, and more, opened a grocery store and restaurant in Industry City in Sunset Park.
The Manhattan restaurant will serve its iconic Mediterranean and Middle Eastern-inspired dishes, adding Toshka (a Lebanese flatbread filled with grilled cheese), Saj wraps filled with shaa or moussaka and rice bowls, according to a press release. Beers and wines from Lebanon, Morocco, Greece and Sicily will also be available.
“For as long as I can remember, consumers have been asking us, ‘When are you coming to Manhattan?'”And I’m excited to be able to have an answer for them now,” said Christine Sahadi Whelan, a fourth-generation co-owner of Sahadi. “Marché 57 gave us the best opportunity to sign up for the food hall. “A rich variety of cultures, traditions, and culinary talents. We’ll be launching some new food products, as well as our iconic hummus, aged meze, baklava, and more.
Sahadi’s will fit well with Market 57, which debuted at the construction of Hudson River Park this spring and features vendors selected throughout Jamestown (with contributions from the James Beard Foundation) and led by chefs who have traditionally been underrepresented in the industry.

“Sahadi’s is a true New York establishment and a component of the city’s multifaceted culinary cultural fabric,” said Michael Phillips, president of Jamestown. “They perfectly complement Market 57, where new and old dining concepts are combined to showcase the diversity of New York’s dining scene. “
Sahadi’s at Market 57 will be open from 11 a. m. to 8 p. m. Sunday to Thursday and 11 a. m. to 10 p. m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The food corridor is at 15th Street and West Side Highway in Hudson River Park, between Little Island and Chelsea Piers.
