Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has avoided any punishment from the Football Association for his comments on refereeing following the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle last month.

Arteta called the video assistant referee’s decision to allow the Magpies’ winning goal at St James’ Park “disgraceful” and “disgraceful”.

He later accused him of misconduct.

But the FA said an independent regulatory commission had found the rate unproven after a hearing.

“He alleged that his comments constituted misconduct in the sense that they insulted the referees and/or were negative to the game and/or brought it into disrepute,” the FA said in a statement.

In the written reasons for the charge not being proven, it was revealed Arteta claimed that: “The word ‘disgrace’…’has a very similar spelling and pronunciation to the Spanish ‘desgracia’.

“The Spanish word has connotations of misfortune, tragedy or bad luck than the connotations of its English equivalent that recommend contempt, dishonor or disrespect.

“While the English meaning may lead to interpretations of abuse or insult, this was not the intended meaning.”

Newcastle’s winning goal had three incidents that led to lengthy VAR checks: first, whether Joe Willock had taken the ball out of play in pre-season, then whether Joelinton had fouled Gabriel to set up the goal, and finally, whether Anthony Gordon was offside when he scored.

In his written comments, Arteta said members of the opposition had told their players the ball was offside, but VAR was convinced it wasn’t.

Arteta also claimed that his comments in interviews “stem from a passionate preference for improving the criteria and not just pointing out the perceived injustices suffered by [Arteta] or [Arsenal] the game. “

The Gunners boss felt his comments fell within the types of behaviour referenced in a segment of the FA’s ‘Essential Information for Managers, Owners and Administrators – 2023/2024’ that deals with ‘Media and Social Media Commentary’.

Arteta stressed his commitment to the criteria “with the aim that any similar incident is addressed in the most effective and precise way possible. “

Newcastle’s goal is one of many debatable and high-profile incidents involving VAR this season.

Luis Diaz had a goal wrongly disallowed against Liverpool in a 2-1 loss to Tottenham.

Speaking after the game, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp said his side’s defeat had come in “the most unfair circumstances” with “crazy decisions”, with the PGMOL refereeing body admitting that “significant human error” had been made.

The incident analysed in the brief the reasons given for rejecting Arteta’s allegation, and the Regulatory Commission also took into account “weaknesses and disruptions in the VAR process” and accepted that they were “a source of immense frustration” for the Arsenal manager.

The result of Arteta’s unproven allegation means he can return to the Brighton bench on Sunday, having served a one-match suspension on the touchline in last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa for accumulating 3 yellow cards this season.
