Millwall announces Joe Edwards as new boss and Chelsea manager Andy Myers appears as assistant

Millwall has shown the appointment of Joe Edwards as its new head coach.

Edwards began his coaching career at Chelsea’s academy before joining the first team controlled by Thomas Tuchel and Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge.

The 37-year-old, who also followed Lampard to Everton, unsurprisingly turned to his former employers when building his team, with Andy Myers arriving at Millwall as an assistant. Myers was in charge of Chelsea’s under-21 team last season, before moving. to the loan branch this season.

Edwards has handed down his post as England U20 head coach to the new permanent boss at The Den, replacing Gary Rowett, who left the club by mutual consent last month.

“First of all, it’s a very proud day for me and my family,” Edwards said on the club’s website.

“Even though I’ve been coaching for a long time, a lot of people know that this is my first managerial position as a head coach.

“Over the years, at other levels, you think you’d like the opportunity to progress. To do it at a club like this, to be head coach of Millwall Football Club, I don’t take it lightly. Everything. I’m excited. “

Edwards will take charge of the club’s education for the first time on Tuesday, preparing for his first game in the dugout on Saturday, when Millwall face Sheffield on Wednesday. Adam Barrett, who has led the team as interim coach since Rowett’s breakup, will be part of Edwards’ team, as will goalkeeping coach Andy Marshall.

Millwall are currently 18th in the league standings, having won just two of their last ten games.

Chairman James Berylson said: “I’m excited about Joe. I think he’s very forward-thinking and has positive views about the progress we can make as a club. “

“It’s a painstaking process, where no stone is left unturned, and Joe is engaging, attentive and impressive throughout, and I felt like we could have a productive relationship together.

“We welcome Joe and Andy to The Den with open arms and look forward to seeing the impact they can have on and off the pitch in what we hope will be a long relationship with Millwall. “
