MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The governor of Minnesota on Thursday called the National Guard to help ensure security and keep the peace on a scale through Vice President Mike Pence and Ivanka Trump in the city where George Floyd’s death sparked angry protests spreading around the world.
Governor Tim Walz said a hundred Guard infantrymen had mobilized at the request of the city of Minneapolis.
“To be careful with protecting the people of Minnesota, we asked the Minnesota National Guard to keep the peace,” said Walz, a Democrat.
The stopover comes about a month after the president made a stopover in the city and met with small business owners whose outlets were broken due to riots that followed Floyd’s death on May 25. his knee opposed Floyd’s neck for several minutes despite Floyd’s air requests.
Prior to Thursday’s scheduled event, Pence, Ivanka Trump and Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia visited the site of a Minneapolis salon torn apart by the riots. Flora Westbrooks, owner of Flora’s Hair Design, on the verge of tears as she pointed to the debris-filled lot where her living room once stood. “I never thought it would happen . . . Not me,” he said.
“We’re with you, ” said Pence.
