Mohamed Salah sets Premier League record in Liverpool’s victory over Ipswich

Salah had in the past shared the record for most goals in the first round with a trio of English football greats (Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer and Frank Lampard) with eight.

Salah joined Liverpool in 2017 and played a key role in Liverpool’s 2019-2020 season, when they were top of the table.  

During seven seasons with Liverpool, Salah scored 155 goals and recorded assists.

Liverpool’s victory over Ipswich marked their first game under Arne Slot, who replaced veteran manager Jürgen Klopp, who resigned in the off-season.

This is Ipswich’s first season in the Premier League since 2002. Recently, music star Ed Sheeran acquired a minority stake in Ipswich, his favorite team as a child.  

Sheeran watched the game from a VIP box at Portman Road.

The meeting between Liverpool and Ipswich is the first of many on the opening weekend of the Premier League. With this victory, Liverpool joins Manchester United, who beat Fulham 1-0 on Friday, to start the season on the right foot.

There were five more matches later on Saturday, with Arsenal (runners-up in the last two seasons) against Wolverhampton.

Defending champion Manchester City begins its name defense against Chelsea on Sunday.
