The biggest bats in the Red Sox lineup have struggled to produce this season. Mitch Moreland continues to do his thing to fill the gaps.
Moreland hit two home runs, one shot over the Green Monster to send the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 to Boston on Sunday.
“I knew I had to move something, ” said Moreland. “The guy, threw a lot of soft ones. I went up there to see a box in the domain and get it. “
It is the fourth home race in Moreland’s career and the first since August 4, 2017 against the Chicago White Sox. Moreland has six house runs in just 31 at-bats this season, a forged touch for a team waiting for players like JDMartinez and Andrew Benintendi to split up.
He gave Boston his first playoff win of the season with an apartment with Tampa Bay.
Moreland attacked his teammates after crossing the marble, traversing the league’s social estating policies. He also won a bucket of ice water over his head, and Moreland felt it was a must-have birthday party for a team looking to break his recent offensive problems.
“I’m pretty sure we broke some rules, ” said Moreland. “I felt the boys caress me. I’m not going to say who, but some guys might have hugged me. Obviously, I took an ice bath. So he killed that, cleaned up the germs. “
Xander Bogaerts tied with two outs of Thomas Hatch (0-1) to prepare the winner of Moreland. Matt Barnes (1-1) pitched a ninth scoreless score to take the win.
Rafael Devers also hit a house run for the Red Sox, a welcome sign after starting the day with 0. 170 (9 out of 53).
The Blue Jays now head to Buffalo, New York, where they will play their best home games in their Triple-A partner across the Niagara River from Canada.
Toronto’s first game at Sahlen Field is Tuesday night versus Miami. The Blue Jays were unable to play in Toronto this year through the Canadian government due to coronavirus-related fitness issues, and have been on the road for each and every game so far. .
The Blue Jays have a day off on Monday, however, manager Charlie Montoyo said the team invited the stadium to take a quick look at the changes, adding new lighting.
“We haven’t noticed them either, ” said Montoyo. ” We’re going to give players a chance to see if they need to see what the night looks like. “
Boston starter Nathan Eovaldi pitched six innings, allowing three runs and six hits, adding two home runs, but had a save from his bullpen, which kept the Blue Jays goalless and goalless for the rest of the game.
Blue Jays starter Matt Shoemaker also lasted six innings, allowing two runs and allowing the race to score for a pitching error.
Moreland put Boston ahead 1-0 at the time of entry, with Shoemaker’s lead over the central wall of the area for his fifth home run of the season.
Cavan Biggio tied in the third, jumping on an Eovaldi cutter who slid over the plate and connected his fourth home run of the year downtown.
Boston regained the lead in the third when Shoemaker covered Alex Verdugo’s floor ball and attempted to throw a double play, instead throwing the ball past short field Bo Bichette and midfield, allowing Jackie Bradley Jr.
Teoscar Hernandez of Toronto had a double in the fourth and scored with a two-out single by Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Bichette hit a house run over Eovaldi in sixth place on a line downtown to take him to 3-2.
But Devers tied him at the Boston entrance, dragging Shoemaker’s first lead over the center draw fence for his home run of the season.
Referee Paul Nauert, the team leader who was the dish at Saturday’s game, was absent from Sunday’s final. Nauert got rid of a hard ball from his face mask in Saturday’s third inlet, but was able to finish the game.
On Sunday it was a three-man team, Ryan Additon taking Nauert’s position on the plate, Chad Fairchild at first base and Carlos Torres at third base.
Tiles: Hyun Jin Ryu (1-1, 5. 14 MPM) will be on the mound on Tuesday when Toronto receives Miami in Buffalo. He is 3-1 with 2. 39 p. m. in 4 career openings against the Marlins.
Red Sox: Roenicke called a starter for Monday’s first game of the series as opposed to Tampa Bay, but said Colten Brewer (0-0, 2. 57 ERA) would play a role, either as a starter or getting some loose paintings in the relays’ bullpen.
