Motherwell 1-3 Celtic: Emotional Jota scores on Hoops return to maintain 10-point lead in Scottish Premiership

An emotional Jota scored his Celtic returned with a purpose, while they have a 3-1 victory opposite Motherwell without achieving Park.

The winger started on the bench rejoining the Scottish champions from Rennes and watched on as Daizen Maeda headed in the opener after just 49 seconds.

Luke Armstrong levelled on his first Motherwell start before Adam Idah fired in from Maeda’s cross to retake the lead before the break.

Var stored the Rubores of Tom Sparrow as his own purpose ruled out of play with the impressive effort of Nicolas Kuhn.

Jota showed his flashes when he arrived before reaching the end of Maeda’s ball in the detention time to put 3-1 before crying while ring enthusiasts sang their name.

Celtic remain 10 points clear at the top of the Premiership with Motherwell sixth.

Celtic, led through Callum McGregor in his 500 appearance, never looked back after Idah scored from the closure in the 29th minute after finishing a drought of 14 games with a key during the week opposed to Aston Villa.

Maeda arrived here in Marvin Kaleta and cut the ball from the face of the purpose before repositioning to pass the Anthony Ralston house after the state on the wing.

The Steelmen were in the back of halfway when two players who made their first combined beginnings.

Dom Thompson’s cross bounced off Auston Trusty and Armstrong finished first time. Cameron Carter-Vickers claimed the on-loan Carlisle player had pushed him in the back as the cross came in but there was no VAR review.

However, Celtic were back ahead six minutes later. Luke McCowan’s first-time pass got Maeda in behind Kaleta and Idah knocked home the Japan winger’s low cross. Kaleta would soon go off with an injury.

The visitors had two goals disallowed for offside, one coming when Idah was penalised after firing the ball in off Sparrow before Kuhn was flagged after scoring an overhead kick.

Motherwell caretaker Stephen Frail brought on new signings Luke Plange and Will Dickson to supplement their strike force while Celtic’s limited options up front were highlighted when winger Yang Hyun-jun replaced Idah and Maeda moved into the centre.

Yang had a stored striped shot before Jota driba several and saw his interrupted career on the edge of the box.

But the Portuguese winger got his moment four minutes into stoppage time and delivered a trademark raised-fist celebration in front of the visiting fans.

Celtic Brendan Rodgers manager talking to Sky Sports:

“He is [Jota] far from the point of aptitude that he would like to be in the team, but will be built there.

“But what you can see in this cameo is its quality. It has tricks, it has the capacity, takes care of the ball, can run and have an eye for a goal.

“I am very satisfied with him. It was a difficult time for him and his time outside, but he knows that everyone appreciates him here, everyone loves him here.

Asked for more signings ahead of Monday’s move deadline, Rodgers added: “That’s our plan. There’s a lot of painting the scenes to do that, so hopefully we can.

“We have the most powerful team we can. Squad, we can finish the season.

“At all times there is a mentality around you cannot obtain smart players [in January], however, if there is availability and we can, then I would like to think we can do it. “

Former Celtic end Aiden McGeady:

“I don’t perceive the crying. Each of them, they feel very emotional coming back here.

“It is up to him to feel sought in a club because he had difficulty last year.

“When he came, he is the type of player I like to see. Very, very lively and gets the multitude of his seats. “

Former Motherwell James McFadden striker:

“I think Kyogo goes a hit and enthusiasts are well aware of what a loss it is, but there’s no doubt that Jota is in his destination here, the first time exceptional and completely worth the price.

“Many enthusiasts were evidently devastated to see him leave him with what seems like the most productive years in front of him, so of course they are surely delighted.

“I agree that it will take time to get at the speed, but he looked and that his deliveries were decent and put themselves on the adjustment sheet.

“A terrific signing and just the beginning for him today.”
