SANTA CLARA, California (AP) – Nick Mullens missed a Kyle Juszczyk wide open on his momentary game pass and launched an interception that came back to land on his last landing.
It’s the kind of day for the San Francisco 49ers, who couldn’t produce an impressive moment of consecutive functionality without injuring incumbent quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Mullens committed three ball losses, adding a getaway that set Philadelphia’s starting score in the last quarter and the six-man team that helped seal a 25-20 win for the Eagles on Sunday night that sent the Niners to their home defeat at the time of this season.
“We had a lot of opportunities,” Mullens. No executed. I feel pretty black and white right now. I just didn’t run. That’s what it’s all about: three ball losses, 14 rotation problems. That’s all. “
A week after pitching for 343 yards and landing in a win over the Giants, Mullens was not as strong for the 49ers (2-2) as opposed to a much tougher Eagles defense.
He threw an interception into the red zone in the first half to deny the Niners a chance to score, then melted a bit in the fourth quarter.
With a 14-11 lead in San Francisco, Mullens lost a getaway with a Cre’Von LeBlanc strip bag that Malik Jackson regained, marking the Eagles’ score with a 42-yard landing pass from Carson Wentz to Travis Fulgham.
Then, in the next possession, Mullens launched an interception that Alex Singleton returned for a touchdown.
“I just wasn’t as precise as I wanted,” Mullens said. “I felt we could have taken credit for some of the opportunities ahead. I just want to run better.
Coach Kyle Shanahan fired Mullens after that third gift and C. J. Bathard tried to lead an overdue comeback that in the end failed when his desperate rebellion fell incomplete in the finish zone, the ultimate game.
Mullens had just put San Francisco in too big a hole. The night began with his foot when he missed Juszczyk in a deep shot on the first drive.
Mullens was absent for maximum adjustment as he was unable to connect to his open receivers. All-Pro winger George Kittle had a great day with a record 15 receptions for 183 yards and a score, but that’s not enough.
“I wasn’t going to get too fast today,” Coach Kyle Shanahan said. “I had a challenge with that forehead. I know, and Nick knows he can play better.
The Niners hope they might not want to see this for a while. Garoppolo missed the last two games for a sprained ankle, but could be in a position to return next week when San Francisco receives Miami.
Your beginner quarterback’s return to the box will be a great seasoning for NFC protective champions, who have lost their first two house games of the season.
They have been heavily hampered by injuries, with season-ending injuries to defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas. Garoppolo, Kittle, star cornerback Richard Sherman, No. 1 receiver Samuel, offensive end Raheem Mostert and flight attendant Dee Ford are among the other key players who have missed the season.
“I don’t think we were betting on our popular and we were able to play,” defensive lineman Arik Armstead said. “But it’s a long season. It’s only the first quarter of the season. We have many more matches and I am extremely happy to continue this adventure and improve. I feel like when we get our boys back completely, we’ll be in a smart position. “
