The club announced that Sunday night’s Premier League match would take place, but asked its supporters to be patient due to road closures.

The Metropolitan Police said officers were called to Northumberland Park in Haringey shortly before 6am on Sunday morning after a man was discovered unconscious, the Met said.

When they arrived they discovered that he had suffered stab wounds and, despite attempts by paramedics to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tottenham Hotspur posted on

“This afternoon’s Premier League match against Nottingham Forest will take place as scheduled, but the entirety of Northumberland Park Road and Vicarage Road, as well as the north end of Worcester Avenue, will remain closed for the duration of the match.

“We will tell the enthusiasts as soon as possible and ask them to be patient and allow more time. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and all those affected.

Chief Inspector Stephen Johnston-Keay, who is in charge of policing in Haringey, said: “Our minds are with the guy who tragically lost his life.

“I can assure the local population that specialized detectives are investigating and will spare no effort to identify what happened to him, identify and arrest those responsible.

“I would like to thank the local people for their patience and understanding as we carry out this work.

“If you have any data that can help us, no matter how insignificant, please let us know. You’ll see officers on the cordons and patrolling and they’ll be in a position to listen. “

There was a heavy police presence around the stadium as fans arrived for the match.

Much of Northumberland Park, a largely functional street, and Worcester Avenue remained cordoned off. These roads pass directly and descend from the east side of the stadium.

Several officials and forensic pathologists worked on the cordons.

Police spoke to citizens and sports enthusiasts who had been diverted from the area.
