All eyes were on LSU Quarterback Myles Brennan’s debut on Saturday as he tried to fill the shoes the size of joe Burrow’s Heisman Trophy, but it was the K. J. Mississippi state and Costello stole the show.
Costello pitched for more than six hundred yards with five landing passes when Mississippi State knocked out protective champion Tigers 44-34, opening the Mike Leach era in style.
For a quarter, LSU and Mississippi State gave the impression that they were heading for a defensive fight, with the Bulldogs winning 3-0. And then the offensive fireworks started.
It was a top-down functionality for Brennan, who showed flashes but could not keep up with the Mississippi state attack. An equally vital story was the absence of defensive superstar Derek Stingley Jr. , who missed the game because of a disease not caused by COVID 19. He was missed by LSU’s defense on Saturday.
The defense of the name LSU turns out to be completed as temporarily as it began. Saturday’s functionality will be the subject of scrutiny in Baton Rouge.

K. j. Costello Giveth, K. J. Costello to go
But most of all, give.
The Tigers probably wouldn’t have expected to start their name defense by allowing Costello to throw more than six hundred yards. Without Stingley, they would rarely have an answer for Costello, Kylin Hill outside the backfield or Osirus Mitchell and JaVonta Payton outside.
Costello made some good throws:
