Naples changes stadium name in honor of Maradona

NAPLES, Italy (AP) – Italian Naples on Friday renamed its stadium after former captain Diego Maradona.

The City Council of Naples unanimously replaced the call of the Stadio San Paolo to Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

“Naples is very happy with today’s decision,” the club said in a brief statement.

Maradona died last week at the age of 60 at his local Argentina. Fans piled up for thousands in the Naples stadium to mourn him, leaving candles, flowers, photos and notes.

Over a seven-year period at Napoli from 1984 to 1991, Maradona led the club to its Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990, the Italian Cup in 1987 and its main European title, the UEFA Cup, in 1989.

The day after his death, Maradona was honored through Napoli for his europa League setting against HNK Rijeka when all players wore a shirt with the inscription “Maradona 10”.
