“Mosul,” an action film that immerses audiences in combat between a renegade police unit and ISIS fighters who destroyed their homes, purchased through Netflix.

The deal comes more than a year after “Mosul” debuted at the 2019 Venice Film Festival. This partly reflects the difficulty of “Mosul” as an advertisement (it is subtitled, has no major movie stars and deals with a confusing political situation). Also because 101 Studios, the label run by former Weinstein executive David Glasser, acquired the film with the aim of releasing it. These plans have failed and, as a result, the agreement with Netflix.

“Mosul” produced through the administrators of “Avengers: Endgame” Anthony Russo and Joe Russo through their corporate AGBO. The brothers used their influence to make the film.

“We know it’s unconventional,” Anthony Russo said in an interview with Variety shortly before the film screened at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival. “But we hope that the global film market will be open to new concepts and excited through new concepts. Joe and I need to use the capital we’ve accumulated to help movies like this locate an audience. “

The New Yorker Studios, which in the past was the creator of “The Old Man and the Gun”, produced the film. It was written and directed by Matthew Michael Carnahan, who wrote “Deepwater Horizon” and “World War Z”. Mosul “marked the debut of Carnahan’s director.

The film is about Luke Mogelson’s 2017 play for The New Yorker, “The Desperate Battle to Destroy ISIS. “

Netflix was “Mosul” in November 2020. Hollywood Reporter has cut the sale to Netflix.
