New head coach Jimmy Thelin to replace existing Aberdeen players, says interim boss Peter Leven

New head coach Jimmy Thelin will take over existing Aberdeen players who remain at Pittodrie beyond the summer moving window, interim boss Peter Leven said.

Elfsborg Thelin has signed a three-year contract to manage the Don’s from June 3.

The 46-year-old will inevitably rebuild the squad with his own signings in preparation for his first season in Scotland.

However, many members of the current squad are on long-term contracts and will most likely remain at Pittodrie next season.

Leven believes Thelin will be a player who has underperformed in the Premiership this season.

This improvement is due to the fact that the Reds’ poor form in the Premiership has resulted in a sixth-place finish.

Aberdeen will start Motherwell’s final six games at Pittodrie on Saturday.

Leven said, “From what I’ve heard, Jimmy develops people.

“It’s smart for the players and also for us as coaches, for everybody.

“Jimmy has a track record.

“He took Elfsborg from where he was to fight for the league title. “

Thelin is renowned in Sweden for generating and maximizing emerging young talent.

While most of the skills are transferred overseas from Elfsborg, Thelin has created a player routine to update them.

Aberdeen’s emergence played a key role in the dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

Jack Milne, 21, a graduate of Pittodrie’s youth academy, and winger Ryan Duncan, 20, purposely fired shots in Hampden.

Milne scored, Duncan missed his shot when his shot hit the post.

Duncan had to wait a long time to take his penalty as Dons goalkeeper Kelle Roos was treated on the goal line for cramps.

Leven said: “Two graduates of the academy, Jack Milne and Ryan Duncan, stepped in to take a penalty.

“They had the courage to accept them and that’s enough for me. “

Crystal Palace midfielder Killian Phillips’ penalty was saved as Celtic ruled the penalty shootout 6-5.

After Hampden’s pain, Leven will now have to rally the Dons for the Battle of the Final Six.

The risk of being dragged into the relegation play-offs is still extinguished.

Aberdeen are five points behind Ross County, who are in the relegation play-off place, with five games remaining.

The Dons face Ross County in the final game of the season.

Despite the disappointing league campaign, Leven insists Thelin will inherit a “talented” team in June.

And their goal is to finish the season on a winning streak to achieve that.

Leven said: “Jimmy inherits a talented team and helps keep an eye on the games.

“It’s been an up-and-down season where the form of the league hasn’t been enough.

“However, we are unbeaten in 4 league games, so we have taken a step forward. “

Speaking about the poor league campaign, Leven added: “It’s not an attitude because they work hard every day and give me everything.

“The mentality of the people is there.

“And our goal is to finish the season because we’re a little bit fit now.

“From Saturday we have five important games left. “

Thelin will accompany Elfsbog to Pittodrie with Elfsbog’s assistants, Christer Persson and Emir Bajrami.

And Leven will take on the role of first-team assistant coach Thelin.

Leven is a candidate for the vacant position of Director at Barnsley.

The Dons manager is reportedly on the English club’s League One finalist list following the sacking of Neill Collins as Oakwell boss.

Thelin will remain in Elfsborg until the direct Swedish flight enters the summer holidays.

However, the new manager will follow the Dons’ games from his home in Sweden until the end of the Premiership season.

Thelin also helps maintain normal contact with Leven.

Leven hopes knowing that the new coach is comparing post-separation games will give the Dons an edge.

He said: “The players know who is watching them now for contracts and at the club.

“I hope I’ve galvanized the players and everyone is encouraged. “
