New Mexico football team spends about $70,000 a week in the middle of COVID-19

The University of New Mexico spends about $70,000 a week playing its football games in Las Vegas amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking to Nicole Auerbach of Athletic, New Mexico athletic director Eddie Nunez said he is “willing to pay” the cash for the team to play because it will result in a big gain as a visitor.

“If I go on to win $300,000 to put our team in Las Vegas, but I know that at the end of the day, I’ll go on to win $3. 7 million or 0 (for not betting at all), I think ‘I’d go through 3. 7,’ he said. “To give our young people the chance to play with the cases we faced (in the state of New Mexico), it was the right decision.

The eight-game calendar for Mountain West began on October 24, but the Wolves found the the the met in a dead end. His opening game opposed to the state of Colorado canceled due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in Bernalillo County.

Nunez announced on October 30 that the football team would move to Las Vegas where he would play games at Sam Boyd Stadium, home of the UNLV program in Mountain West. He told Auerbach that the $70,000 spent each week will be used to stay “about 140 others connected to the New Mexico football program living outdoors at the Hilton right now. “

Student-athletes can attend their classes, however, Auerbach noted that this forced them to wake up an hour earlier due to the time difference between Albuquerque and Las Vegas.

The Wolves played their first two games of the season on the San Jose state road and Hawaii. Saturday’s Nevada game will mark his first home game for the 2020 season.
