A day after Black Monday, Mike Vrabel of the Tennessee Titans was fired after six seasons, adding one that included an AFC championship game.
Vrabel played two more playoffs with the Titans and was named the 2021 Coach of the Year. He went 54-45 overall in Nashville, posting a disappointing 6-11 last season. While there have been hypotheses that Vrabel could simply be industrialized, The Athletic reported that Tennessee is concerned that an industry may be too long.
His firing comes after the Atlanta Falcons fired head coach Arthur Smith, who finished 7-10 for the third straight season, with an overall record of 21-30 as the Falcons’ head coach and no playoff appearances.
Following Smith in the coaches’ shooting cycle, there’s Ron Rivera of the Washington Commanders.
Under Rivera, the Commanders won the NFC East with a 7–9 record in 2020. They never took a step forward after that, going 7-10 in 2021, 8-8-1 in 2022 and in 2023, even worse at 4-13.
Who else will sign for Vrabel, Smith and Rivera in their search for a new job?Three other head coaches had already been fired this season: Josh McDaniels of the Las Vegas Raiders, Frank Reich of the Carolina Panthers and Brandon Staley of Los Angeles. In addition, two general managers were also fired, Dave Ziegler of the Raiders and Tom Telesco of the Chargers.

#Titans general manager Ran Carthon says he and coach Mike Vrabel “never had any problems. We were in sync. Still, I need to clarify that. I don’t wish Vrabes anything yet the best. I’m a friend to him. “

The Titans’ idea of trading Vrabel was too confusing and would take too long, the resources said. They wanted to act quickly. I’m told that Vrabel never contacted a landlord for an industry or asked him to leave Tennessee.

Mike Vrabel was considered one of the most productive coaches in the NFL just a few years ago. But it’s all transience in the NFL.
In a surprise, the Tennessee Titans responded to a straight-up losing moment of the season by firing Vrabel. The Titans started 2-4 before their end and never played much of a role in the playoff race after that. It’s the rare season under Vrabel in which the Titans were irrelevant.
The Jaguars fired D. C. Mike Caldwell after he gave them a playoff spot at the end of the season. Details here.
The Panthers also announced interview requests with eight candidates for their general manager opening:
— Giants assistant general manager Brandon Brown — Buccaneers assistant general manager Mike Greenberg — Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis — Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby — Saints assistant general manager Khai Harley — Ravens vice president of football administration Nick Matteo — Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds – Raiders champion Interim General Manager Kelly
Dennis Allen is reportedly safe in New Orleans, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The Panthers announce that they have requested interviews with nine applicants for their primary coaching positions: – Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson – Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik – Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan – Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn – Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald – Dolphins offense Coordinator Frank Smith – Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris – Offensive coordinator Ravens Todd Monken – Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales

As the national championship game between Washington and Michigan nears kickoff, discussions about Jim Harbaugh’s long coaching career will grow louder and louder. Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wetzel elaborated on the issue on Sunday night, writing:
Harbaugh could even benefit from a new NFL rule that prohibits newly hired assistant coaches from talking to teams until the end of the departmental playoff circular on Jan. 21. You can communicate with whomever you want, you want.
But does it?
While multiple sources around Harbaugh believe he does, there is a prevailing unpredictability about a man who has never acted in a conventional manner.
“In the end, it’s Jim who knows,” said one confidant.
