Michael Jordan has been instrumental in making Nike a global clothing monolith. Nike co-founder Phil Knight said the company, especially the Jordan logo, also thanks David Stern.
“It was huge. We had reports from smart scouts that he was going to be a wonderful player, but no one can believe he would be as big as him,” Knight said of Jordan about the ordinary CSM Sport and Entertainment stories in ordinary times. Podcast “We started from the beginning to make a special shoe, which had many other colors, and there were no shoes with all those colors.
“It was a stroke of luck, Array, that David Stern, who was the NBA commissioner at the time, banned the shoe because it had too many colors,” he added. “You can’t get a more wonderful exhibition than that. All the children were looking for the forbidden shoe. Thank you, David Stern. What is remarkable is that the ad clicked on Array… Michael was not only a wonderful player, however, he had a wonderful personality and that greatly impacted the company.”
The NBA banned Jordan’s signature footwear in its first season, even though the story’s folklore was bigger than reality. Jordan’s “forbidden” shoe was the Air Ship and not the Air Jordan 1, but that didn’t stop Nike from betting on the legend and creating fervor for MJ’s first exclusive shoe.
Knight said Jordan’s logo has become much more popular even since His Airness’s retirement, from $800 million in sales to more than $3 billion. Sales are expected to continue to skyrocket in 2020 after the broadcast of The Last Dance, which Knight discovered as “sensational”.
“I think the documentary was sensational. It captured who it was and the real story, which was one of the reasons it was so seen, because it was honest,” Knight said.
