Tony Cascarino has claimed that Darwin Nunez appears to be close to Liverpool’s starting line-up when everyone is available, and warned that the Reds star is starting to remind him of Timo Werner.
Cascarino spoke to The Times and said the situation surrounding Darwin Nunez is a major factor for Liverpool heading into this summer.
It is a combined crusade for Núñez after his time at Anfield. He has scored 15 times in all competitions. And it definitely showed flashes of its quality and potential.
Danny Murphy has said in the past that Nunez has a better chance as a goalscorer than Gabriel Jesus. But not everything went as planned.
He missed a number of very clever opportunities in the campaign. And Cascarino now fears the Uruguayan will temporarily fall out of favour with Merseyside.
Some big names are leaving, they want new faces and they have one main challenge to solve: Darwin Nunez,” he told The Times.
“He had a moment where he clicked, but with Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota back, he’s not hunting anywhere near the starting eleven. Cody Gakpo is also ahead of him in the pecking order.
“I hope I’m wrong, but he reminds me of Timo Werner at Chelsea: a lot of running, pushing and promising, but in the end he fell short. He wants a great pre-season with a lot of goals. “
It is unfair to recommend that Núñez be able to emulate Werner. There are similarities. Werner arrived for big money after an exceptional era with RB Leipzig. Chelsea spent £47. 5 million. And the German has never come close to justifying those fees.
Like Núñez, Werner’s record in his first year in England is disappointing. But there’s so much more to love about Liverpool’s forward line.
Chelsea has been in decline for some time. And its attacking characteristics want an overhaul this summer.
Liverpool, meanwhile, has a unit that can remain in combination for years. Sometimes that means Nunez plays less.
But there will also be times when he looks like the ultimate player on Jurgen Klopp’s side.
