Official: Mateo Retegui contract for 4 years at Atalanta

Europa League champions Atalanta have announced the official agreement with Genoa for the transfer of Mateo Retegui to Bergamo. The 25-year-old centre-forward underwent a medical on Thursday morning before signing a four-year contract.

Atalanta would have paid 25 million euros in advance to Genoa to sign the former Club Tigre star. La Dea will spend 3 million euros if Retegui’s transfer to the Gewiss Stadium lives up to expectations. The Argentina-born striker will update his colleague in the national team Gianluca Scamacca.

After a disappointing EURO 2024 campaign, Scamacca hoped to change his fortunes at Atalanta. However, the former Sassuolo and West Ham United player succumbed to a long-term knee injury in a pre-season friendly. He will most likely be sidelined for six months due to a torn ACL.

Scamacca’s injury has forced Atalanta to temporarily act in the market. Less than fifteen days before the start of the new campaign, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men have selected Retegui to lead the line in the absence of the Italian star. Retegui still has everything going well after an injury-plagued first season in Serie A.

He scored just seven goals and provided assists in 29 games for Genoa. It was a little enough to quench Gasperini’s ever-present thirst for goals. Atalanta can therefore only hope that the club’s record-breaking signing El Bilal Toure will find his place in Italy after an injury-plagued 2023/24 campaign.

What worries Atalanta is that they are about to waste Teun Koopmeiners. Gasperini has shown that the Dutchman needs to sign for Juventus.
