The third Ohio State game in Illinois on Saturday was canceled because the Buckeyes had an increase in COVID-19 instances this week, leaving the most sensible Team of the Big Ten on the verge of not being eligible for the convention title.
Friday night’s cancellation came about seven hours after the state of Ohio announced that coach Ryan Day tested positive and would not go with the team to Champaign, Ill.
The team did not fly to Illinois as scheduled Friday night, so further testing may be conducted at COVID-19 in Columbus, Ohio. The revised plan to fly on Saturday morning for a start at noon ET.
After returning more positive evidence, the state of Ohio announced that the game was canceled. The school did not reveal how many program members had tested positive, such as its year-round policy.
The state of Ohio has suspended all of the team’s activities.
“We continue to see an increase in positive testing this week,” Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith said in a statement. “The health, protection and well-being of our student-athletes is our main concern and our decisions about their well-being will continue to be guided through our medical staff.
This is the game time of the Big Ten season that Ohio State canceled. The first came after an outbreak in Maryland forced a postponement before this month. first school football playoff rankings released earlier this week.
Big Ten regulations require groups to play at least six games this short season to be eligible to participate in the convention championship game. The minimum can fall if the average number of games played in all big Ten groups falls below six (an average above 5. 0 will be rounded to six).
In this case, the minimum number required to be eligible for the championship game would be two less than the average.
The Big Ten has 18 games to play, adding 4 on Saturday. More than part of those games would have to be canceled for the minimum number of games to qualify for the convention championship to be less than six.
Ohio State has two games left on its regular season schedule: at Michigan State on December 5 and at home to Michigan on December 12. The Big Ten Championship Match will be played on December 19.
The Big Ten began its season on october 24 weekend and has not scheduled any open dates for makeup on its eight-week regular-season show.
Wisconsin number 18 has already lost three games after Minnesota canceled the previous week due to a COVID-19 outbreak, leaving the Badgers, Big Ten West favorites, with only five regular-season games at most.
Day is this year’s nineteenth elementary school football coach to publicly acknowledge that the virus was tested, adding Nick Saban of Alabama this week.
Also Friday, the Southeastern Conference announced a series of plan moves to catch up on the last five postponed games in December, adding Alabama to LSU.
The Tide and Tigers was scheduled to play on November 14, but LSU may simply not be due to a lack of players due to COVID-19.
Arkansas in Missouri will also be surpassed on December 5. The Razorbacks were forced to postpone their game with the Tigers this week. Missouri intended to play a makeup game with Vanderbilt.
Alabama to Arkansas, Mississippi to LSU and Missouri to Mississippi state must be postponed.
Alabama in Arkansas can be played on December 12, the week before the SEC championship game.
LSU already has a game with Florida scheduled for December 12, however, it can play Against Ole Miss on the day of the SEC Championship Game, which the convention uses to catch up on regular-season games involving department winners.
In school football, 16 of the 58 games originally scheduled for this week have been postponed or cancelled, some substitutes have been added.
Utah will go to Washington after its scheduled Pac-12 war parts have failed to play, and San Diego State will play Colorado in a conference-free game after Southern California failed to play the Buffaloes.
