(Reuters) – Oldham Athletic appointed former Leeds United and Liverpool striker Harry Kewell as head coach on a one-year contract with an extension option, announced League Two on Saturday (fourth division).
The 41-year-old former Australian forward-year-old replacement replaces Dino Maamria after The Tunisian, whose Latics team finished 19th in qualifying last season, was fired on Friday.
“I’m excited about the assignment and don’t get me wrong, it’s going to take time. Because all I think this club wants is stability and if we can get it, then we can start growing things.” “Kewell said the club is here
“We have to get back to basics and we have a ‘clean table’ here now and I think the fans, myself, the owner, we should all start to see the progress of this club because we all think there is wonderful potential.”
Kewell, who has played in two World Cups with Australia, began his training career in 2015 as an under-23 coach with Watford before taking over at Crawley Town in 2017.
He returned to control after a disappointing season at Notts County in 2018, where he fired after less than 3 months in command.
Last year, Oldham appointed Paul Scholes as manager, but the former Manchester United and England midfielder resigned after 31 days in command.
