Things are down! On Friday 15 March in Nyon, Switzerland, UEFA gathered crowds for the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Marseille will face Portuguese side Benfica, who are second in their league. Eliminated from the Champions League, Benfica already has 3 Europa League finals ahead of them. Marseille avoid Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen, lately in the top English and German leagues, and will have the advantage of playing the second leg at home. Olympique de Marseille will have the chance to exact revenge, thirty-four years after their questionable elimination from the Champions League in 1990 through the Portuguese club. While OM had won the first leg (2-1), Vata had scored a goal with his hand in the second leg (1-0), slamming the door on the last against the Focenses with seven minutes remaining.
If they qualify for the semi-finals, Marseille would face the winner of the double-header between Liverpool and Atalanta Bergamo. On the menu for the other two quarters, an Italian derby, in which AC Milan will face AS Roma, and a clash between Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen and unexpected English club West Ham.
In the second leg of the round of 16 on Thursday 14 March, OM almost conceded in an attack that looked like a comeback when Villarreal, thrashed 4-0 in the first half, led 3-0, before Jonathan Clauss reduced the score in added time (3-1).
Tied 2-2 at home, Benfica, on the other hand, managed to confirm their position in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Glasgow Rangers.
The quarter-finals of the Europa League will be played on Thursday 11 and 18 April. The final of the festival will be played on May 22 at the Dublin Arena in Ireland.

In their first appearance in the quarter-finals of the European Cup, LOSC had the heavyweight of this stage of the competition: Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, who eliminated Ajax Amsterdam on Thursday 14 March thanks to a 4-0 win in the second leg. The Basque coach, at the helm of the current fourth-placed team in the Premier League, is a specialist in the big nights of the European Cups, having won four Europa Leagues (three with Sevilla FC and one with Villarreal).
Lille will also have advantages in the second leg at home. If they qualify, Paulo Fonseca’s team would face the winner of the clash between Greek side FC Olympiakos and Turkish side Fenerbahçe. Both are playing for their names in their respective leagues.
In the round of 16, LOSC, who put in a strong performance away from home, beat Austrian side Sturm Graz 3-0, thanks in particular to a brace from Jonathan David. In the second leg on Thursday 14 March, Lille were content to manage their merit (1-1).
The first legs will be played on 11 April and the second legs on 18 April. The semi-finals will be played on 2 and 9 May. It should be noted that, with two Greek clubs still in contention, the draw will take place on Friday 15th. March may result in a Greek final on May 29 at the Agia Sofia Stadium. . . from Athens, Greece.
