Celtic have dropped even more trouble in the name race. And the bomb fell on the Hotline.
Failure to defeat Aberdeen means a convincing win for Rangers over the Reds on Tuesday night will see Philippe Clement’s team go top of the table. Celtic’s board and boss Brendan Rodgers are bang in the firing line after a transfer window which their fans fear has left their team vulnerable.
Scott Kerr of Knightswood said, “The Celtics are pitiful and have regressed. It pains me to say that I can see average Rangers winning the league, all thanks to an unambitious board that wouldn’t possibly spend the millions they have and takes Celtic enthusiasts for granted.
David Bryce, Troon, continued: “Celtic’s current team and manager are an absolute disgrace. Rodgers was a disastrous appointment and will be sacked. Huge adjustments are needed at board level. The only way to enforce this effectively is civilized is to refuse to buy subscriptions. Peter Lawwell’s re-election was an unmitigated disaster.
John Caw said: “This is the first time I’ve stopped watching Celtic. Absolutely pathetic, incompetent. Worthless. Get a grip board or possibly there won’t be anyone around.
Bill Waugh, Glasgow, commented: “I said it in September and November that we would not win a trophy. This result proves it. Rangers will go top soon and not be caught. Celtic are a shambles.”
Alfie Mullin from London said: “It wasn’t long ago that Celtic fans were talking about having a Rolls Royce manager. I wonder if Rolls Royce bought through Sinclair C5.
Denis Bruce, of Bishopbriggs, said: “Is this near the end? Rodgers’ control record is in jeopardy due to a lack of signings. It almost looks like the board left him out to dry. “
But Paddy Gowans said, “Rodgers has a guy who says yes on the board, who doesn’t give a damn about the fans. “
Rangers fans can sense Parkhead issues and Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach, said: “Only weeks ago Celtic fans were so cocksure they’d win the league no matter what, but they look to have serious problems with Rangers in good form and rapidly closing the gap. Clement doesn’t give too much away, but he knows Rangers are now in a good position.”
In Edinburgh, contrasting atmospheres. Hearts fans are buzzing after Lawrence Shankland’s epic earned them a win in Dundee.
Davy Cook of Capital said: “I hope it is Shankland who has already invested £6m in the Hearts by staying in the wonderful Edinburgh team.
Ian McDonald, Innerleithen, added: “The best song in the last two weeks is Hearts are falling apart again by the Dundee choir. Hmmm..wrong.”
There is not much joy in the Hibs after their defeat to St Mirren. John Scott, from Grassmoor, lamented: “My concern is that Hibs could take the place with only one or two Scots in the squad. I mean a year, months, not a few days. Since the 19th century, no Hibs team has played with so few Scottish-born players.
“All Hibs needed was a senior, highly experienced manager who knew reputable Scottish football. £750,000 used for a failed Dutch striker could have bought a half-decent Scottish centre-back who could only attack a ball and a full-back who can make it a more sensible centre. Total incompetence from the most sensible control who evidently thinks so little of the Scottish game and the players at our smaller clubs that they would be going through a brick wall for Hibs.
Kevin Lord, Drylaw, added: “It’s time for Hibs to throw all the academy coaches’ laptops in the trash and bring back old scouts in the rain to bring in football players, numbers that can reach the right stats. “
Tom Paterson, a fan of Killie, Falkirk, said: “A thank you to Billy Bowie and Derek McInnes for closing the deal to get Kevin van Veen. Now we can consolidate the fourth position and put pressure on Hearts for third place.
