Parejo brand ex club, Villarreal beats Valencia

MADRID (AP) – Dani Parejo scored the winning goal in the second half to give Villarreal a 2–1 win over his former Valencia in the Spanish league on Sunday.

Another former Valencia player, Paco Alcecer, scored for Villarreal, who jumped to the top position with his 3rd win of the season, adding 11 problems in six matches, one more point than Real Madrid, Getafe, Cádiz and Granada.

The sixth seed Real Betis can take the lead if he beats the Royal Society at home later on Sunday.

Parejo scored the winning goal in the 69th minute with a right-footed shot from outside the area after young Japanese forward Takefusa Kubo made a play that hit the crossbar before going in, but did not celebrate the goal.

Parejo joined Villarreal, Valencia’s pre-season rival, after nearly a decade with his former club. The game maker had been the captain of Valencia in recent years.

Alcecer, who played for Valencia from 2012-16, opened the scoring for Villarreal with a penalty in the 6th minute.

This is the time of Valencia’s consecutive defeat, which was added to the table with a shot from outside The Gonzalo Guedes area at 37.

Kubo, loaned by Real Madrid, ejected in the discount time after receiving a momentary yellow card after a sliding entry.
