PARIS, 22 Aug (Reuters) – The street of the Champs-Elysées in Paris will be pedestrianised on Sunday night and the wearing of the mask will be mandatory, the authorities said on the eve of the Paris St Germain clash with Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.
Thousands of others flocked to the famous street on Tuesday night to celebrate the arrival of Ligue 1 champions in Europe’s last club tournament after beating RB Leipzig.
Few other people wore protective facial devices despite the accumulation of coronavirus infections in France, while bars were also crowded while other people watched the game, raising considerations about social distance.
Police will be deployed on the Champs-Elysées and in the vicinity of PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium on Sunday when PSG confronted German champion Bayern in Lisbon, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said.
They will distribute masks to those who do not wear them, Darmanin added.
“I ask everyone to act responsibly so that (the event) can be an expression of joy and a source of unrest for Parisians,” Darmanin said in a televised commentary.
Some PSG players have also suggested enthusiasts be careful.
“This is an exclusive moment and I hope you will also respect the coverage measures,” defenseman Thiago Silva said in a video posted through the club on Twitter.
On Friday, the French Ministry of Health reported 4586 new coronavirus infections in more than 24 hours, after the country reached a post-closing closure the day before.
Seventeen metro stations will be closed in Paris on Sunday night, Darmanin said. On Tuesday, 37 others were arrested for riots following the semi-final celebrations. (Report through Sarah White, edited through Pritha Sarkar)
