PARIS (AP) – French champion Paris Saint-Germain announced Saturday that coach Mauricio Pochettino will update newly fired Thomas Tuchel.
Pochettino, 48, coach of Tottenham in the Premier League for five years and led the Spurs to the Champions League final in 2019.
Pochettino inherits a talented but under-performance team, according to PSG standards, begins the new year in 3rd position, Lyon and Lille, and his first game at the controls will take place on Wednesday in Saint-Etienne.
Pochettino played 95 games for PSG as a physically powerful central defender from 2001 to 2003 and was appreciated by fans.
Tottenham fired Pochettino in November last year, a few months after the last Champions League appearance, where the Spurs lost 2-0 to Liverpool.
Similarly, Tuchel fired 4 months after leading PSG to the Champions League final, losing 1-0 to Bayern Munich.
PSG finished 2020 with a point in 3rd place after beating Strasbourg 4-0 on 23 December, but Tuchel asked after the attack on his comments to the German channel SPORT1.
The German coach reportedly claimed that leading PSG more as a politician or sports minister, which is the point of difficulty, and that he had not gained enough popularity to lead the club to its first Champions League final.
PSG has fought for moments this season with 4 losses. He failed against his great rivals, losing 1-0 at home to Lyon and Marseille, tying 0-0 in Lille. He also lost two of the first three games of the match. The Champions League ended up entering the playoff ahead of their group.
The start of the season was delayed after several players, joining Neymar and Captain Marquinhos, tested positive for coronavirus after returning from a sanctioned club to the Spanish hotel in Ibiza.
