Ready or not, they’re the rookie supporters of the New England Patriots.
The Patriots were forced to reorganize their body of supporters after a off-season in which they lost Kyle Van Noy, Jamie Collins and Elandon Roberts to lose steadfast and Dont’a Hightower to retire.
Third-year professional Ja’Whaun Bentley, the first defensive captain, is a guaranteed opener in defense of the Patriots. Veteran John Simon will almost in fact retain his starting post as an outside/defensive side supporter.
After that, it becomes speculative, but rookies Josh Uche, a second-round selection, and Anfernee Jennings, a third-round selection, have a huge effect on New England defensive lineups while competing for shots with Veterans Shilique. Calhoun and Brandon Copeland and 2019 select Chase Winovich in the third round.
Uche played as an internal and external supporter during his school career in Michigan. Jennings basically played as a top defender, but he also had experience in the middle of the defense.
“These players have a clever degree of flexibility, and they proved it in college, and they proved it here at camp,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said Tuesday. “How it will unfold, of course, is to be seen, a plan, we will have a concept of how we think it would be or where we need to use them, and that we can replace them from week to week, etc.
“But as things are, we’ll have something, but we’ll have to see how it works. They have a lot of versatility. There are other players on our team who also have versatility, so when you mix those things, simply having to perceive how you feel provides you with the mix from the point of view of execution, but it also gives you some flexibility. to manage the things your opponent does.
Copeland has reveled in the internal and external supporter. Bentley has been primarily an in-house supporter in his time with the Patriots, while Calhoun, Simon and Winovich are the main defenders.
The Patriots will find it difficult to see how to fit in the 1-for-1 exchanges of Hightower, Van Noy and Collins.
In the past, Van Noy split his time between the external backing and the internal backing, but played 776 shots from the edge and only 58 in the area from the punch line in 2019, according to Pro Football Focus. Hightower played 488 internal shots and 273 over the outdoor backing man last season. Collins was more of a hybrid option, with 439 ball shots and 337 on the edge.
Asking recruits to move so much can be a complicated decision with a truncated off-season without a preseason. But the Patriots like the way Uche and Jennings move forward. Patriots supporter coach Steve Belichick saw “a lot of progress” on both players.
“We participated in those WebEx meetings with those guys in the spring and put a lot of things on their plate mentally at the time, just because obviously we couldn’t do anything physically with them,” Belichick said. “But we put a lot on his plate, he tried to provide as many things as possible. . .
“Then there is a small deviation from the starting point once they return to construction because we were able to stay in touch with them. So we had to paint on it for a few weeks, and they came here every day and every day, they get bigger every day. They have a long way to go, but they are doing very well and very well. I’m satisfied with those two guys. “
Steve Belichick described Uche and Jennings as “very other players,” however, he noticed that rookies played and ended up, fell into politics and provoked the quarterback.
“Everything we ask of our supporters, we try to put on their plate,” Belichick said, “and let’s see what they can handle. “
If Uche and Jennings are ready, the Patriots have backup plans in Copeland, Calhoun and Winovich. Patriots can also experiment with other rosters.
If the Patriots decide to deploy a three-man front, then Simon and one from Calhoun, Winovich, Uche, Jennings or Copeland will play 3-4 supporters outdoors. If the Patriots line up on a four-man front, Simon would probably play as a defensive winger, Bentley would play as a central supporter, Jennings or Copeland could simply line up on the supporter in the strong look and Uche could be used as a supporter on the weak side.
Bentley will assume the maximum of Hightower’s old responsibilities. Uche projects in the same way as Collins, while Jennings’ maximum productive comparison would be Van Noy. But none of them are a maximum productive parallel.
Uche is in fact the Patriots’ sportiesty option in this position, possibly lacking a prototypical size. Uche had a rating of 6 feet 2 inches and 250 pounds with wolverines and weighed 6 feet 1 inch and 245 pounds in the NFL Scouting Combine. 6 feet 3 inches and 226 pounds on the Patriots list, which is strange to say the least. It looked bigger in the patriots’ educational field.
“I mean, I look too much at that, ” said Steve Belichick. ” Some guys are fat, but they play a little light. Some guys are light, they play a little big. “
Replacing Hightower, Van Noy and Collins will be a complicated task for the Patriots, but Uche and Jennings inspired their coaches this off-season.
The Patriots will face the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at thirteen a. m. ET at Gillette Stadium. We’ll publicize what the Belichicks have planned for Uche and Jennings in Week 1.
