Patriots Practice Notes: The Quarterbacks’ Fight; Sony Michel, Stephon Gilmore Shine

FOXBORO, Mass. – The showdown at Wednesday’s New England Patriots education camp came early in non-competitive exercises when Gunner Olszewski made his impression of Odell Beckham Jr.

Field marshals ran on deeper pitches to helpless open receivers in the area when Brian Hoyer threw a pass slightly over Olszewski. The Patriots’ sophomore team indifferentially extended a hand to catch the ball in the air, provoking cheers from teammates.

Olszewski was described as “stronger, faster” and “brave” through the Patriots’ corner, Stephon Gilmore, after Wednesday practice. You could say he’s the Patriots’ second-best catcher at Camp Julian Edelman.

Dress: shells and shorts

Missing: DT Beau Allen, S Devin McCourty, WR Will Hastings

Physically can’t run the list: RB Lamar MIller

Limited: TE Devin Asiasi, WRs Jakobi Meyers and Devin Ross, S Kyle Dugger, LB Terez Hall

Back: RB Sony Michel (PUP), WRs Julian Edelman, Devin Ross, Jeff Thomas, S Adrian Phillips

QB Statistics: Cam Newton: 11 out of 18, INT in general; 7 out of 12, INT in 11 vs. 11 Brian Hoyer: four out of nine in total and 11 against 11 Jarrett Stidham: 6 out of 6 versus 7

QB Winner: It was a bad day overall for the undesoned quarterbacks of Stidham. Newton knocked out catcher Mohamed Sanu on his first setback in practice. He kidnapped through the deep Terrence Brooks in a pass that sailed into the hands of extreme rookie Dalton Keene and into Brooks’ arms.

Newton’s most productive launch came here on a landing connection with Rex Burkhead. The ball carrier swooped for the well-placed pass. There’s a sure doubt that it would have mattered in a game. The ball touched the ground but did not appear to move, so it seemed to be trapped from our angle.

Hoyer also threw a pass directly at Brooks, who passed through the head of the closed wing Ryan Izzo. Brooks wasn’t expecting the ball and dropped it.

Stidham only pitched 7-on-7, but was a best 6 of 6. He won shots in 11 vs. 11, but those were the opposite direct transfers to the scout team.

The paintings are absolutely similar to Newton’s, which in the end is the right decision. Stidham can simply make an effort for Newton if, in spite of everything, he had the possibility to perform full team exercises sometime before the season.

Interceptions: Brooks

Pass Jumps: CB JC Jackson, CB Justin Bethel, CB Stephon Gilmore, S Terrence Brooks, LB Josh Uche

Uche showed speed by staying in the area with rookie winger Dalton Keene in 11-on-11 training.

Drops: None

More notes:

– Offensive part Sony Michel made a wonderful comeback to exercise outside the list of physically disabled. He looked explosive and elegant in his cuts.

Michel and Damien Harris will compete for the role of beginner ball carrier. Harris is a more consistent pass receiver, however, we’d be a little surprised if the Patriots took Michel’s starting spot because of the lingering effects of a low-season operation. Harris would probably want to win his carries at the start of the season after receiving only four rookie touches.

– Keene won more paintings than always with Asiasi limited in practice. Keene still suffers from expansion pains. He scored three times. One pass deleted, one interrupted and one incomplete.

– The Patriots’ return launch team was forced to do special two-lap exercises. It seemed to be a challenge to find the right staff on the ground.

– Gilmore, yes, you read it correctly, took a turn when the offensive players faced the defenders in a ball transport exercise. The Patriots’ corner knocked the Terrence Brooks protection to the ground. Gilmore said that after practice, he was still looking for a turn in the attack. He also interrupted an open receiver pass to the open receiver Damiere Byrd 11 vs. 11 exercises.

– Gilmore excused himself from education on a non-public issue last week. He said Wednesday that it’s not similar to the contract.
