Peter Schmeichel of Manchester United believes that his successor among David De Gea’s positions at the club could remain there for 10 years.
The 29-year-old Spanish goalkeeper has been rising tension in recent weeks after two mistakes against Tottenham and Bournemouth, but Schmeichel maintains overall confidence.
“David still has a long way to go,” he said in an interview with United Review, the club’s day calendar for his opposition to Southampton on Monday.
“He’s a young boy. I may have been playing here for 10 years. It’s wonderful to see your progression here and it will be very exciting to see you use the reports to play an important role in United’s future.”
On Monday night, De Gea will play his game for the club after surpassing Schmeichel’s record of 398 games in United’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa last week.
The goalkeeper who has played the most for United than for De Gea is Alex Stepney with 539 games.
“There have been trophies in the last nine years and David will need more before finishing,” Schmiechel said. “I would win a lot more medals than Player of the Year trophies.”
“Nine years at Manchester United is a long time and getting 400 games with the club is a huge milestone, something very few players have achieved.”
“There is no debate about it: it has been since he arrived at the club. He’s been Player of the Year for almost part of his seasons at the club.”
“Some of the stops he made were certainly phenomenal. There are too many to list, but it was clearly Juan Mata’s loose kick [in 2012], which I found a turning point in his United career.”
“From there, I was hunting David and I was thinking, ‘This guy… it’s something special.” Then there was the prevention of Joel Matip in Anfield, the one he did with his foot. Their reactions are incredible.
In the seven seasons since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, De Gea has comfortably been the club’s most productive player, having had a lot of education in difficult times.
But now that United begins to form an offensive team, Schmeichel hopes De Gea has to adapt his game.
“This team plays with Ole and that means David’s role is also evolving. If you’ve been a goalkeeper who’s been busy for years and you’re no longer busy, you want to replace the game a little bit. You have to find new tactics to stay your focus, stay with the game. »
“We need to fight for titles and you win them with blank leaves and goals. If you back up and keep a blank sheet, it promises you a point, that’s all. But if you score goals, you have a better chance of winning.” 3 points and, in the long run, we seem incredibly exciting.”
