Controversial TV presenter Piers Morgan has Liverpool fans “pathetic” after booing the British national anthem at Anfield on Saturday.
The Reds announced on Friday that they would play “God Save the King” before the game to mark the coronation of King Charles III. The news came after the Premier League “strongly suggested” that all clubs play the anthem this weekend.
As well as booing the national anthem before kick-off, Liverpool fans can be heard chanting “You can put your crown in your ass” during the match. and qualification for the Champions League.
Morgan shared the video policy of Liverpool fans booing the anthem with a one-word response: “Pathetic. “He later added, “Defending loose speech doesn’t mean agreeing with everything you hear. Liverpool fans have every right to boo the anthem on coronation day, just as I have any and all rights to call them pathetic for that.
Liverpool enthusiasts have been booing the national anthem since at least the 1980s, starting with a protest against the status quo and its remedy of the city. Asked about the resolve to play the anthem before the Brentford game, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp replied: “The club’s position is my position. Is that clear.
“As for that, it’s definitely something I can’t comment on. I’m from Germany, we don’t have a king or queen, I’m 55 years old and I don’t like it. “
A Liverpool player said on Friday: “Just over a week ago, the Premier League contacted all the local clubs and strongly recommended marking this historic case at home games this weekend and provided a list of activities that clubs can take part in.
“Prior to kick-off and in the popularity of the Premier League’s request to commemorate the coronation, players and officials will gather around the centre circle when the national anthem is played. It is, of course, a non-public selection like those at Anfield. Saturday marks this instance and we know that some followers have strong criticism about it.
