Porto wins Portuguese name with victory over Sporting

PORTO, Portugal – Porto secured its Portuguese league name on Wednesday in 3 seasons by beating Sporting Lisbon 2-0, and its enthusiasts took to the streets to celebrate amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s a feeling, ” said Danilo. “Unfortunately, the enthusiasts couldn’t be here, this would have made things even more special, but I’m sure everyone is satisfied at home right now. We thank you for your support.”

The fireworks lit up nearby as players held flags and scarves in midfield.

It is Porto’s fifth consecutive victory, which also won the championship in 2018 to finish Benfica’s streak of 4 consecutive titles. Benfica won the trophy last season.

It is the 29th Portuguese title in Porto, moving to 8 Benfica.

This is the 18th consecutive season that Benfica or Porto wins in the Portuguese league. Sporting Lisbon, third in the standings this season, won the name in 2001-02.

Porto’s chance of scoring before Danilo’s target arrived when Fubio Vieira’s distant shot hit the crossbar at 63. Danilo opened the scoring with a header from a corner at 64, and Marega sealed the victory from internal area injury time.

Both had goals voided in the first half.
