Premier League clubs vote against five substitutions rule for 2020/21

With players having spent just over three months on the sidelines prior to the resumption of the Premier League campaign in June, fears over fitness and injuries understandably came to the fore ahead of the restart.

In an attempt to aid players, it was subsequently announced in June that Premier League sides would be allowed to make up to five substitutions per game for the remainder of the Covid-19-hit season.

Clubs were, however, not allowed to make all five subs at separate times, with three changes still the permitted number.

For the remainder of the 2019/20 season, Premier League clubs will now be able to make substitutes instead of

The implementation of this rule over recent weeks certainly divided opinion.

The likes of Sean Dyche and Roy Hodgson spoke out against it, suggesting that clubs with larger squads are favoured.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho, on the other hand, has recently spoken out in favour of keeping the rule.

Now, ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, Premier League clubs held a meeting on Thursday to vote on whether or not the new substitution rule should be maintained for next season.

And, as per the Telegraph, during the shareholders meeting, Premier League sides voted against keeping the rule for 2020/21.

The eventual result saw 11 teams vote against, with the remaining nine in favour.

A vote of 14 in favour would have been required to implement the extra subs rule as law for next season.

The Telegraph did not reveal which clubs voted either for or against, though the three newly-promoted sides are said to have voted to return to the three-sub rule.

Clubs also voted on the whether or not matchday squads should be kept at 20, or return to 18, as they were prior to the season’s restart. That vote ended with a 10-10 tie, meaning squads will go back to 18.

The Premier League have since also confirmed the vote results, via both Twitter and their official website.
