Hello and welcome to the edition of Prep Rally. My call is Eric Sondheimer. The main games of the school football championship were announced on Sunday. The first week is the regionals, then come the championship games on December 8 and 9 in Southern California. look.
It will be Mater Dei (12-1) taking on San Mateo Serra (12-0) in the CIF State Championship Open Division bowl game on Dec. 9 at Saddleback College. Let’s be frank: the clock is waiting for the third consecutive season. Serra lost to Mater Dei two years ago 44-7 and to St. John Bosco last season 45-0. Serra coach Patrick Walsh watched Mater Dei on TV last week and said, “This may be as smart or better than any team I’ve ever seen. ” They have players going to Georgia, Alabama, Texas and Oregon.
Serra has a bigger team than last season and returns much of his defense. The only question is whether Serra’s most outstanding alumnus, Tom Brady, is still eligible.
Most of the state’s other playoff groups (all sectional champions can participate) will play regional games this week looking to succeed at one of the state’s final 3 venues at Saddleback, El Camino College or Pasadena City College.
Birmingham, the City Section Open Division champion, will be on his way to San Diego to face Del Norte, coached by Green Bays Packers’ Super Bowl-winning linebacker Nick Barnett.

There was drama during the high school football championship weekend.
Mater Dei recovered from a 28-0 loss to St. John Bosco in the Trinity League final by beating the Braves at the Coliseum 35-7 in the Division 1 final. Here is the report.

One of the wildest games took place in Division 6, where Simi Valley beat Mira Costa after the lights went out. Here is the report.
Rio Hondo Prep had to prevent a two-point conversion attempt from Santa Monica to win the Division 9 final 29-27.
In the City Section, Birmingham continued its dominance by winning the Open Division name for the fourth consecutive season. Quarterback Kingston Tisdell threw 162 passes and interceptions. Here’s the report
Fairfax earned a 20-14 victory over Chatsworth in the City Division II final thanks to a winning landing through Darvens Joseph. Here is the report.

How did the football superpowers of St. John Bosco and Mater Dei come about?
Once upon a time, several South Division schools preferred to dream of winning a Division 1 championship.
Those were the days when public and private schools had equivalent opportunities. In the late 1970s, Fountain Valley, Loyola, South Hills, Los Altos, and Edison all won titles. In the 1980s, Riverside Poly, Fontana, Crespi, Servite and St. Louis were the first to visit the city. John’s. Paul claimed the crown. In the 1990s, the champions were Long Beach Poly, Bishop Amat, Mater Dei and Eisenhower. At the beginning of the 21st century, Orange Lutheran, St. Margaret, Centennial Crown, and Poly ruled Southland.

The state cross country championships at Woodward Park in Fresno saw his performances from several protective champions.

Anthony White, a football coach at Santa Ana College and a former high school coach in Southern California, has died of cancer. He was 42 years old. He helped make Buena Park High’s football program a success. . .
Ed Prange, a men’s basketball coach at Loara for 33 years, has passed away. He is 59 years old. He won more than 400 matches at Loara. . . .
Former El Camino Real and UCLA baseball star Ryan McGuire has joined the Santa Margarita coaching staff. He has also played in the majors. . . .
Mater Dei, a women’s tennis state championship.
It’s a game that Ethan Garbers had dreamed about for years as a child. The former Corona del Mar quarterback led UCLA to a victory over USC a week ago, cementing a position in Bruin history.
In the past, Garbers guided Corona del Mar to a 16-0 season in 2019. He first enrolled in Washington before moving to UCLA, where there was no guarantee he would ever be able to start as a quarterback. Down, he persevered.
