VILLENEUVE D’ASCQ, France (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain beat Lyon 2-1 in the Coupe de France final and scored Kylian Mbappe’s brace in Kylian Mbappe’s final game for the club on Saturday.
French winger Ousmane Dembele and Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz scored for PSG in the first half.
Lyon defender Jake O’Brien scored a comforting goal in the half.
PSG won the league and cup for the first time since 2020, when they won a domestic treble by also lifting the now-defunct Coupe de los Angeles Ligue.
Mbappe celebrated with a big roar after the final whistle. With an equally big smile on his face, he hugged and greeted his companions. PSG in ecstasy lifted Mbappe and threw him into the air.
“We feel the weight of things a little bit more because we realize that it’s really all over,” Mbappe told beIN Sports. “When I said goodbye to the Parc des Princes there were still a few games left, so you’re in the spotlight on what’s in store for us. Now I don’t have anything left at PSG, but I’m very satisfied that I was able to finish with a trophy.
Despite their defeat in the final, Lyon still qualified for the Europa League by finishing sixth in the league.
Dembele opened the scoring in the minute with a header from Nuno Mendes’ cross.
Ruiz doubled the lead by converting a rebound in the 34th minute after his header blocked O’Brien.
Lyon goalkeeper Lucas Perri made notable saves in the opening minutes, nullifying Bradley Barcola and Warren Zaire-Emery, but misjudged the ball’s trajectory when Mendes crossed in the opener.
O’Brien cut the deficit to 2-1 with a header in the minute.
PSG have struggled in the air this season and almost conceded a corner kick in the 64th minute, but goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma deflected a header from Lyon left-back Nicolas Tagliafico over the bar.
“The players are disappointed, but we don’t think we deserve to be proud of what we’ve done,” Lyon coach Pierre Sage told beIN Sports.
Lyon were last in the league in December but piled up more problems than any other club in the second half of the season and finished sixth.
Mbappe struggled to find the back of the net in his last game for PSG. A curling shot from the edge of the box did not trouble Perri in the 20th minute and flew over the bar in the 41st.
In seven seasons with PSG, Mbappé won 15 trophies, 4 French Cups.
While Mbappe has added something to his tally, he remains PSG’s all-time most level-headed goalscorer in all competitions with 256 in 308 appearances.
“I’m satisfied to have been part of their history and to have contributed a little bit to it,” Mbappe said.
The Coupe de France final was marred by violence when Lyon and PSG fans clashed on a highway leading to the venue hours before kickoff.
Fans threw flares and smashed the windows of busloads of supporters. Some buses were set on fire.
The match was moved to the Pierre Mauroy stadium in northern France due to preparations for the Olympics.
Villeneuve d’Ascq became the first city outside of Île-de-France to host the Coupe de France final since the festival’s inception in 1917.
