PSV Eindhoven extend run with top-of-the-table win

PSV Eindhoven extended its lead in the Dutch top flight on Sunday with a 2-1 win over nearest rivals Feyenoord, who also maintained a 14-game winning streak.

The win leaves PSV 10 points behind Feyenoord, continuing their form as they prepare to host Arsenal in their final Champions League fixture on Dec. 12.

After a drab first half, PSV opened the scoring in the 65th minute, Moroccan midfielder Ismael Saibari sidefooting home a cross from Belgian international Johan Bakayoko.

The leaders doubled their merit 3 minutes later, when France defender Olivier Boscagli beat the Feyenoord defence on a corner, heading home to silence the raucous De Kuip supporters.

Mexican striker Santiago Giménez gave hope to the home fans with a long-range shot in the 81st minute that Walter Benitez went into the PSV goal.

This led to a nerve-wracking final era for PSV, but they clung to their winning habit.

With a crushing 5-2 win over Ajax in October, PSV will now have some catching up to do if they are to add more titles to their 24 Dutch titles.

Feyenoord’s only previous loss had come via a 2-1 defeat away to Twente in October, but two draws have also left Arne Slot’s side off the blistering pace set by PSV.

Both have had combined luck in Europe this season. PSV have already qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League after a thrilling 3-2 victory in Seville.

Feyenoord, on the other hand, has struggled in European qualifying this year and is already eliminated. They are confident of a position in the Europa League after the winter break.

Ajax have recovered from their worst start to a season in history, but are still way off the pace in 11th, having suffered humiliating drubbings at the hands of both of the top two.
