“He’s been unlucky enough to succeed in this position and it’s a wonderful skill for the future. “

19:40, Mike Jones

The whistle puts an end to the attack and they settle for an entertaining draw. The stakes were low, but the atmosphere was intense.

A goal either side of half-time gave both enthusiastic teams something to cheer about and there were no major injury concerns for either manager to worry about.

90 minutes: Six minutes of added time will be played before the end of the match.

19:32, Mike Jones

87 minutes: A great turn by Leandro Trossard gives him a touch of dominance in a central domain and he needs to shoot on goal. He makes the effort quite well, but the ball goes up and over.

19:27, Mike Jones

83 minutes: Almost. Goal disallowed!

The Gunners win a free kick on the left of the field which Martin Odegaard takes into the area. Gabriel is in a wide position when the ball comes towards him.

Jakib Kiwior jumped in front of him and sent the ball into the back of the net, but Gabriel got in the way of the game and scored the goal after a VAR check.

19:24, Mike Jones

80 minutes: In the last 10 minutes nothing separates the two teams, but it is the hosts who knock on the door and chase the winner.

They also had a hand in the first half when Arsenal scored. Will history repeat itself?

19:23 , Mike Jones

78 mins: Ben White blocks Pepi’s first effort at a cross before the second is floated over towards the back post. Jakub Kiwior sticks to his marker brilliantly and has enough strength to keep the forward from leaping fully towards the ball.

It falls on the heads of either man and Arsenal can clear their lines.

19:20 , Mike Jones

75 mins: Bakayoko sends the free kick to the far post but Rice is there to receive the ball in the air and nod his head. Arsenal’s counter-attack did not materialise but they controlled to keep the ball high.

19:15, Mike Jones

71 mins: Declan Rice enters the box and plays as a centre-back. Bakayoko is cut and taken outside the penalty area, resulting in a PSV free kick.

Great run from the PSV midfielder who found himself inside the box and beat Aaron Ramsdale near the post with a guided shot.

The ball hit the post and bounced clearly, depriving PSV of the pass.

19:08 , Mike Jones

19:04, Mike Jones

He floats a cross into the box and picks out Nketiah who manages to nod the ball into the side netting. The Arsenal fans believed the ball went in but their bubble was popped pretty quickly.

19:01 , Mike Jones

56 mins: Van Aanholt’s shot is blocked and returns to Tillman. He takes it to the right and throws in a cross to get the ball out of play.

18:58, Mike Jones

18:55, Mike Jones

50 minutes: Equalizer!

An undisputed ball passed through the middle and bounced off Ricardo Pepi. The striker slipped past William Saliba before receiving the ball in the box.

He flicks it across to Yorbe Vertessen who finishes it calmly and puts his team back on level terms.

18:52, Mike Jones

48 minutes: Close! Malik Tillman steps forward and returns the ball to the field, sends the ball to Johan Bakayoko on the canal and the winger reviews the inside.

He passed the ball to Yorbe Vertessen, who shot low away from the post.

Arsenal were a little slow to click after Mikel Arteta made eight changes to the starting XI but went into the break with the lead after a fine shot from Eddie Nketiah.

There may not be many changes at half-time and some other Gunners goal could end this match, as either team has already reached the next round.

18:37, Mike Jones

18:33, Mike Jones

45 3 mins: Bakayoko stops Ramsdale, who manages to keep the ball off the post and faints for a corner. Arsenal defended and went into the break with the lead intact.

Very clever for Mikel Arteta’s men.

18:30, Mike Jones

45 minutes: Three minutes of added time to play at the end of the first half. PSV will be upset after losing the first match, as they started this match well.

18:27, Mike Jones

Magnificent finish.

18:25, Mike Jones

Check to the right and shoot. William Saliba manages to cross and block the shot.

18:18 , Mike Jones

33 mins: Bakayoko sets up Teze to shoot from distance and the defender goes for it. He passes the laces for the ball but lifts it well over the crossbar without disturbing Aaron Ramsdale.

18:16, Mike Jones

30 mins: Chance!

Arsenal’s first moment of joy came from midfielder Mohamed Elneny, who touched the ball on the edge of the box and fired a shot that slid off the turf.

Wlater Benítez dived into the box and saw the ball go wide of the post.

18:14 , Mike Jones

27 mins: Mohamed Elneny moves the ball to Cédric Soares on the wing. The defender picked up the ball and looked for Eddie Nketiah in the box.

At first glance he dominated the nearest centre-back, Armando Obispo, and the home side deflected the ball wide.

18:11, Mike Jones

24 mins: Eddie Nketiah receives the ball and holds it up well before sweeping it across to Kai Havertz. He flicks a cross back into the middle where Leandro Trossard is waiting.

21 mins: Arsenal begin to regroup. Aaron Ramsdale hit the ground running with a long-range shot that thrilled the home fans.

The visitors are starting to have more possession of the ball, although they have not yet managed to create a decent chance.

18:04, Mike Jones

18 mins: Close! A hopeful ball up the pitch comes through for Pepi after Gabriel misses the ball with an attempted clearance. The forward takes it into the box and looks to cut one back for Yorbe Vertessen.

Cédric cleared his lines, the home side won the ball back and came back. The cross came from the right and this time found Vertessen.

He jumped up and sent the ball onto the post, Ramsdale jumped but couldn’t reach it and Arsenal were saved by the post!

17:59, Mike Jones

15 mins: Aaron Ramsdale is down and seemingly has a knock to his knee or shin. He’ll be desperate to play on and show what he can do tonight.

After the physio’s checks and with a grimace, the goalkeeper is back on his feet and in a condition to continue.

17:57 , Mike Jones

12 mins: PSV’s dynamism comes through Bakayoko. I don’t lack confidence at all and I’m in a position to control and face the Arsenal defenders.

There’s also a bit of ingenuity in the winger component and he loses ownership on the edge of the box rather than Jordan Teze’s overlapping run.

17:54 , Mike Jones

9 minutes: Bakayoko sends a cross into the area from the right wing and almost sees Pepi, but Gabriel returns to clear the ball.

Arsenal’s centre-backs worked in the first 10 minutes.

17:52, Mike Jones

6 minutes: Good luck!

The first attack of the night went to PSV. He took advantage of the width presented and Johan Bakayoko on the right side. He takes the ball into the box and makes an early pass to the center.

Patrick van Aanholt is waiting for the ball but the combined efforts of Aaron Ramsdale and Gabriel keep out his effort. The ball rebounds to Ricardo Pepi but his shot is deflected too and loops over the crossbar.

17:48 , Mike Jones

3 mins: Aaron Ramsdale is making his Champions League debut tonight and is forced into an early clearance after a back pass from Cedric Soares.

The goalkeeper helps to stay calm under pressure.

Mikel Arteta watched from above as his predecessor stole the level and Aston Villa joined Arsenal in the race for the name. Unai Emery extended his home win record to 15 consecutive games after adding the moment of Villa Park’s two best wins in the same week.

Triumphant against the champions on Wednesday, Villa knocked down the side who started the weekend as leaders on Saturday night. Though those wins may share the elements of magnitude and scoreline, they could hardly have been more different in how they were achieved.

Villa’s power and commitment were excellent, but Arsenal failed and squandered three points and the chance to extend their lead over Manchester City.

With Arteta suspended from the touchline, Arsenal failed to score any more late goals and the manager left the box moments before the final whistle after Kai Havertz equalised for handball. Moments later, Emery dancing on the touchline, having beaten the club that sacked him after 18 months for the second time and the first since returning to the Premier League.
